I can not update anything anymore. I asked Dell to send me my free for the
life of the computer reinstallation software and they sent me a set for
another system and said it would work. Now after many attempts to restore
after installing a new HD I can not update. I can not get anywhere with them.
Can you help get me back up and running?
Thank You

Which edition of Windows and what Service Pack level ?

In the meantime, see if this resolves the updating issue:

How do I reset Windows Update components?

To obtain the best results, suggest you download the Fixit,
WindowsReset.msi, and save it.
Then temporarily disable the installed antivirus/security suite.
Ensure that the native Windows firewall is now enabled by opening
Secuirty Center in the Control Panel.

Leave the system connected to the internet and then run WindowsReset.msi
using it's Aggressive option. That will download and install the latest
release of the Windows Update Agent (WUA).

When the operation is completed, restart the system.
Did that resolve the updating issue ?

If not, then please post the last 50 or so lines of the
WindowsUpdate.log, located in the WINDOWS directory (folder)
*and* the name of the installed antivirus/security suite -

Just adding -
Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP
installation or you repair a Windows XP installation
