On Wednesday I installed on my WinXP computer the latest Patch Tuesday
updates from Microsoft. Everything installed correctly, as far a I can tell.
However, the yellow shield has come back and Microsoft Update shows one
update to be installed: Security Update for Windows XP (KB 2753842).

I checked my update history on the Microsoft website, and it shows that this
update was successfully installed on 12/19. I also checked Add/Remove
Programs and found the update there.

So...what should I do next?

Thank you!

KB2753842 was reissued on December the 20th due to issues with it's
initial release. For XP, there were 2 updates released on December 11th
that addressed a vulnerability with Kernel-mode drivers, the original
issue causing KB2753842 and KB2779030.
Microsoft recommends installing the re-released KB2753842 even if the
original release is not causing any issues with fonts.

Please check in Add/Remove Programs to see if KB2779030 is installed
also, Jo-Anne.
If it is, suggest you uninstall the first release of *KB2753842*,
restart if prompted to or even if you are not, then download and *save*
the SECOND release from here -

Security Update for Windows XP (KB2753842)
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35845

When you've saved WindowsXP-KB2753842-v2-x86-ENU.exe, please close ALL
open programs and web browsers. If there are any Office components that
load when the computer starts then suggest you close them, too.
Install WindowsXP-KB2753842-v2-x86-ENU.exe now and restart the system
even if you're not prompted to.

Did that get it installed ?

Thank you, MowGreen! What happened is that I decided earlier today, when the
same update showed up again on my second computer, to just go ahead and
download and install it. It seemed to install OK, and I no longer have the
yellow shield. I checked Add/Remove Programs, though, and I do have
KB2779030. If the second install of KB2753842 causes trouble, I'll start
over.

You're welcome, Jo-Anne. Your system should be good to go now as the
second release of KB2753842 resolves the font issue that the first
release of it caused.

Make sense ? As much as MS does. :)
