Bye,

And, I'm hoping the tortured spelling of your name, "sweetsirenaty," is only
a bit of poetic license.

If no joy...
1. Uninstall all Norton software via Add/Remove Programs.
2. Enable the Windows Firewall.
3. Run this removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
4. Immediately install the 30-day free trial version of, e.g., NOD32* or
KAV7**
5. Manually update your new anti-virus application then run a full system
scan.
Do your problems persist now?
[Don't forget to subscribe to your new AV app before the free-trial period
runs out!]

Try uninstalling KB939653 (Add/Remove Programs)
Len
> Try uninstalling KB939653 (Add/Remove Programs)
That doesn't resolve the underlying issue nor does it secure the system.
And no, I don't have any issue so far.
Bye,
Freudi
The update KB939653 IE7 under Vista installs new iexplore.exe and,
yes, sometimes a virus scanner or an other security software doesn't
allow writting a iexplore.exe to a directory. So, disable the security
software and retry to install the KB939653 Patch.
But, I think, the main reason why it will not work is that the UAC
(User access control) will forbid the required actions and it doesn't
ask for it as well. So, disable the UAC only for the first starting of
the Internet Explorer. So, it can do things that only an administrator
could do. Yes, you will say, then I can run it as administrator, but,
by me, it doesn't work.
The Internet Explorer will stuck and hang while starting.
After the Disable actions and a restart, just start the Internet
Explorer as usual, then activate the UAC again for security reasons.
The switching of the UAC could be done easily by starting MSconfig,
and then under TOOLS->Deactive user access control (or something like
this).
Another list selection says something like Activate user access
control...Don't forget to restart after switching something.

Yup, while it "may" not be enough to "disable" Security Software via
their context menues and options.

I don't think so, since the very same *may* happen on Windows XP and
Windows Server 2003 also - without any UAC implemented. False blocking
3rd party "Security Software" is in almost all cases i've seen so far
the cause for the issues in question.

I've seen it on a system already for this kb939653 problem. Disabling
UAC, restart, starting internet explorer, Activate UAC, restart, and
thats it.
It works for that particular system at least. You are right with your
general speakting, but in that case it works very well.

Nope, on the "Security Software" running in the background while
installing KB939653 (and *any* other past and future IE7 update).

Hehe, *which* AV software are you using? Please provide the exact
version number while reading http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942818
in the meantime.
> I recommend that this update is not installed until MS sort it out.
That's a bad advice, if you ask me. Why? The security holes fixed with
update are still open whithout the update beeing installed - and the
underlying problem which causes the installation issue ("Security Soft-
ware" blocking the new iexplore.exe wrongly) is still present too.

This seems to be a major problem (KB939653) I've deleted it twice and now
it doesn't seem to want to re-install, which is a relief. A problem that it
has left behind is that some programmes that could connect to the internet
now refuse to. An example being getting information for cd's for copying on
to my mp3 player. Has anyone else had this problem. By the way I've
included Windows Media Player in my Windows Firewall exceptions but to no
effect
> This seems to be a major problem (KB939653)
Nope, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942818 and please provide
the name and version of the AV software you're running *including*
your Windows version.

Ehm, what did you expect? Someone singing the MSKB article above for
you? ;-)
KB939653 is a cumulative update for *IE*. And you *don't* need nor
want to bore a hole for Windows Media Player into the Windows Firewall.
