Ocassionally I get the blue screen and STOP: 0x0000008E message. This happens
during startup as well as during normal online useage. Any info would be
appreciated. I am considering doing a Clean Install.

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1) when
posting to this newsgroup, please.

How does this problem pertain to Windows Update, mako?

<QP>
0x0000008E: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
A kernel mode program generated an exception which the error handler didn’t
catch. These are nearly always hardware compatibility issues (which
sometimes means a driver issue or a need for a BIOS upgrade).
