Uninstall IE7. That will revert IE back to IE6.
Restart the system.
IF this is Windows XP, then download and *save* IE8:
Windows Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP

Next, Clean boot XP: How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean
boot" state
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353
When the system has been booted to a Clean state, ensure that the native
XP firewall is now Enabled IF a 3rd party firewall has been Disabled
( Open Windows Fireall in Control Panel to check ), then install
IE8-WindowsXP-x86-ENU.exe with the system connected to the internet.
When the installation is complete, restart the system *twice* before
doing anything else.
Now undo the Clean boot steps. Restart the system to normal Windows mode.
Did that get IE8 installed correctly ?
