Is this a sudden, new problem?
What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

The problem is discussed at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/245142, but this
is a 2007 posting, and does not address XP SP3. I have NOT tried any of the
things mentioned, since XP is not specifically addressed.
I have XP Professional with SP3, running a current McAfee antivirus/firewall
application. It is a sudden problem, apparently since 11-9-09, because that
is the last time my Windows Defender was able to update. Scans do not flush
out any viruses or malware.

There is a very good chance that you are seeing the effects of a hijackware
infection!
NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!
Microsoft PCSafety provides home users (only) with no-charge support in
dealing with malware infections such as viruses, spyware (including unwanted
software), and adware.

Also available via...
Consumer Security Support home page

Otherwise...
1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx
NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.
2a. WinXP => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!)
in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm
2b. Vista or Win7=> Run this scan instead:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm
3. Now run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting requested logs
in an appropriate forum, not here.

**Chances are you will need to seek expert assistance in

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

First, I located my WindowsUpdate.Log file in C:\WINDOWS. I opened it with
Notepad, went to the bottom, and starting looking from the bottom up, for
most recent info.
I found error code "0x80004002" and info Using that code, I found web site
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/956708. I used "Method 1" to
re-register my Windows Update Files.
I have XP, so I went to Start-All Programs-Windows Update (found at the
upper-most part of my program list). I was then able to get to the update
web site, and all worked well. Note: if you manually initiate updates (once
Windows scans your PC and finds needed updates), you may get back a window
that says the updates were not installed. This is because your Automatic
Updates are also downloading the updates. Look for your yellow "Updating"
icon in your system tray.
