While Online at Microsoft Update I selected Custom Update. Since I don't use
MS Office or other apps under "settings" I opted out of Microsoft Update and
returned to using Windows Update. I have now decided that I want to turn on
Automatic Windows Update. I find that in both security center and control
panal that the option to turn on Automatic WU or Turn Off is grayed out and I
can't turn it back on.
What to do? Thanks

Both would do the equivalent of this:

control.exe wuaucpl.cpl

What happens if you Run... (e.g. press Win-R) and enter that?

E.g. if nothing happens it could mean that that .cpl file is missing.

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista 64-bit SP2;
Win7 RC; Win7) when posting in a forum or newsgroup. Please do so in your
next reply.

Brian, did you also post about this in Windows Update forum
(http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/threads)?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?
