When I checked START-CONTROL PANEL-AUTOMATIC UPDATES I found it to be turned
off and the entire window was greyed out so I could not change any settings.
I'm using Windows XP Pro SP2. I can go to the web site and manually download
updates but would like to activate the automatic service.

Anyone have any suggestions?

What does [Start > Settings > Control Panel >] Security Center report for
the status of (1) anti-virus and (2) firewall?

Is this your own, personal machine or one belonging to your employer?

Anti-Virus is on and working (Norton 360), Windows Firewall is on.

This is my own personal machine (Dell Inspiron 8600).

And can you enable Automatic Updates via Security Center or is it grayed out
there, too?

1. Check the Service Manager for "Automatic Update" service
Click Start, select Run and type: Services.msc
Press Enter
Locate the - "Automatic Update"
Make sure the service is not disabled and started.

2. If the service is disabled and cannot be started:

Go to START, Select RUN
Type: regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
Press Ok

3. If all else fails:-

Windows Update Greyed Out - Restore (Line 179)

Automatic Updates options are grayed out?:

problem and nohting worked till now. The red automatic updates sign has
disappeared and all appears to be working ok.
