Windows Update keeps crashing

I try to run 'express' update and it scans my computer for required updates
then says "cannot display this page" and crashes. Coincidentally, IExplorer,
Firefox and Verizon MSN keep crashing with a "chksum" error message. no
malware detected. everything was working fine yesterday.

I had the same problem here. 9am CST on 02/16/09.
Using Windows XP Pro, visiting the site in IE 7.0.5730.11
2 differences: I am visiting Microsoft Update, and I asked for Custom
instead of Express. But I kept getting:

(x) Explorer cannot display the Web Page.
... etc ...

On my 4th try, two hours later, it worked! So, I hate to suggest it, maybe
wait a day or two if you wish, then just try again?
(I'm not a Microsoft support person)

You may be seeing the affects of a hijackware infection (cf.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:

2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be):

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum.
