Hello,

For the 80073712 error, please try the following:

To Resolve this error try the following steps :

1. Click Start , type %windir%\winsxs in the Start Search box
2. Press ENTER.
3. Locate and right-click the pending.xml file.
4. Click to select Properties.
5. Click the Security tab, and then click Edit.
6. Click Users, and then click to select Allow Full control.
7. Click OK two times.
8. Try to delete the pending.xml file again.
9. Try Windows Update

Try to open wsus admin page and I get the following error "Service
Unavailable".

Go to IIS Manager and try to browse the page and I get the same error.

80073712 - ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT.

Windows Update file corruption.

Delete the file pending.xml under C:\windows\winsxs

and/or

Reinstall the Windows Update Agent

A new version of the Windows Update Agent is available

Another way I got it to work was to go under advanced options in the
secutiry tab and change the rights to my account. Then you can change
the user control.

Diana, of all the threads I've tried to fix error 80073712, you seem to have
the best credentials and perhaps know how to fix my problem with this error:

I have been receiving the above error for the past two weeks when attempting
to update Windows. I recently upgraded from Home Premium to Ultimate, but
now can't remember if the error started with Premium or Ultimate but it
started about the time of the upgrade, perhaps by doing the task list for the
upgrade.

The pending.xml file does not exist anywhere on my system.
I receive error 80073712 even when installing windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe
from a commmand prompt, per instructions from other forum posts.

Problem reports show two consistent errors since 5/10/08:
1.
Problem Event Name: WindowsWcpStoreCorruption
OsVersion: 6.0.6001.18000:1
Type: MissingWinningComponentKey
Path: x86_microsoft-windows-w..wsupdateclient-core_31bf3856ad364e35_7.0.6001.18000_none_a052d92e34802200
OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033

2.
Problem Event Name: CbsPackageServicingFailure
Stack Version: 6.0.6001.18000

Status: 80073712
Failure Source: Resolve

Target State: Installed
OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.256.1

I've tried your solution below, but have no pending.xml file, and all of KB
articles that I believe have been recommended by the forums and I'm at a
complete loss of what to do next.

Can you help? BTW, McAfee is unable to enable on-access scan, too, I
believe from the same problem.

I am in exactly the same situation as dcretired, had Vista Premium, upgraded
to Ultimate and now this! And I too have not got that sxs file when I try to
do a search! What do we do is there an answer? Never expected to have this
problem when doing an upgrade.

technogranny, I could not solve the issue myself, so I eventually created a
free tech support incident with Microsoft through support.microsoft.com. MS
Tech Support tried several things to no avail. They eventually gave me a
full ultimate install product key and I reinstalled ultimate from scratch.

-- Yes but did you eventually resort to doing another 'upgrade' thereby
leaving your files, programs etc intact, or did you end up having to do a
'wipe' upgrade, so wiping the Vista Home Premium?

Well thanks for that dcretired, I too have contacted support and I am
awaiting their input. So you ended up having to wipe Home Premium! Well it
was very good of them to let you have the full Ultimate product key they
might have to do the same with me I think!

I cannot seem to find a pending.xml, I'm using Home Premium, haven't changed
it or anything, I've done every suggestion from
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947366 and still have been unable to install
Vista SP1

Please advise
Thank you.

Did you manuallly run the System Update Readiness Tool; was it offered

I tried this as suggested but am unable to select "allow full control" That
choice is greyed out. Help, please! Have been unable to update since Dec 2
because of the 80073712 error. Very very frustrating.
