Fix for error code 8007F0CC while downloading SP2.
This error code seems to be due to a modified boot.ini
file. The most common reason for modifying the boot.ini
is to overlay a new boot screen during windows boot.

The generic, unmodified line under the [operating
systems] section of the boot.ini file should look as
follows.

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft
Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Some programs that change the boot screen add a variable
to the end of this line such as /Kernel='some-file-
name'.exe

Remove this variable, reboot, and try the SP2 install
again.

This worked on many of my client machines.

For the novice, how exactly do you do this process? I know how mine got
messed up, I installed Style XP, and altered the boot screen, then quickly
changed it back.

If it is indeed your boot.ini file the fix is simple.
Just do a search for the file boot.ini Start -> Search ->
For files or Folders. If you havent already done so you
are going to have to enable the option to display hidden
files or folders since the boot.ini is a protected OS
files. In the search screen click Tools -> Folder
Options -> 'View' tab, make sure Show Hidden Files and
folders is checked and also uncheck Hide protected
operating system files. Click OK and do a search for
boot.ini and open it up in notepad.

Under [Operating systems] Look for the Microsoft Windows
XP line

It should look something like this

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft
Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

If there is anything after /fastdetect delete it save the
file and reboot.

You also MAY want to make a backup of your original
boot.ini and save it as booini.old in case something goes
wrong you can just rename it boot.ini and be on your way.

It seems to me that SP2 alters or in fact removes the
boot.ini file, if this is the case, any alteration would
cause it to bomb on install.

Excellent stuff - I've been wrestling with this error code 8007F0CC
for the last 24 hours, and changing the Boot.ini did the trick!

Thanks a bundle!
