When accessing Windows Update I get the above error message. Apparently
enabling Automatic Updates is now required. While this may be acceptable for
people using high speed connections it is unacceptable for those of us using
dialup. Dialup users need the ability to choose when a large download begins.
Many times it is totally unacceptable for a multiple megabyte download to
start because of issues that take precendence over Windows Update. For
instance, maybe there is something urgent, or time sensitice, I need to
accomplish that is inhibited by sharing bandwidth with Windows Update.

Hi

The only thing Windows Updates (WU) v5 demands is that the Automatic
Updates (AU) *service* is running for WU to work.

So you can turn "Automatic Updates" *off* in the AU applet found in
Control Panel, this way nothing will be automatically installed on
the computer, but WU will still work for manual updates.

I, too, am getting 8DDD0018. In my case, though, I have enabled all the
services, rebooted the system, and the error still appears. Are the three
services referred to in the error message the only services required?

I had the same problem. 3 services needed but all 3 active.
found a post on the windows update service.
someone had a problem with wondows saying the windows update service not
being started while it was. the recommended solution was registering the wu
service
with regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
I did just that and windows update is working again.
Maybe this helps.

I encountered the same problem (all required services were running but
still receiving the Windows Update unable to start error message) and
found a much simpler solution. All I did was move the Automatic Updates
service from Manual to Automatic and *poof* Windows Update was happy again.

So contrary to the information below, it demands that the AU service be
_always running_ despite the fact that the service should be
functionally the same in either mode. Which then means that those of us
who do not enjoy being pestered by our operating system for updates and
random intervals, need to go back and change AU's running mode back to
Manual after however many reboots it takes to install everything. Every
time we need to run WU. Which again reminds me why I don't update on a
very regular basis.

Oh I'm sure there's a reason behind this behavior, likely along the
lines of 'it needs to be automatic so that when it reboots it can force
a connection back to WU (regardless of why token user was utilizing said
computer) so that it can download a new update and reboot again'. It's
just not a good reason at all.

My post did actually say that the service needs to run for WU to work,
and it did not say anything about the state of the service was to be
set to Automatic or Manual, but it is correct that it needs to be set
to Automatic.

What you write above is wrong, it is not the Automatic *service* that
determines if the computer will automatically connect to the WU site
and start downloading updates.

This will only happen if you have enabled "Automatic Updates" *on*
in the AU applet found in Control Panel.

You can turn "Automatic Updates" *off* in the AU applet found in

Control Panel, this way nothing will be automatically installed on

the computer, but the Automatic *service* can still be in Automatic,
and WU will work for manual updates.

Milko, this helped me as well. Thanks for posting this.

I have a very good idea of how mine got unregistered, though.

I just recently (as in within 2 days) used X-Setup 6.6 to tweak my settings
- something I had been meaning to do for quite some time. I made a *lot* of
tweaks, so many that I recorded it into a .reg file to easily do on my other
machines.

I played with the set registration done and then un set it, adn I thikn this
is what caused Windows Update to break.

I'll test it more and see if it does, indeed, cause it to break, and that
should also give me a clue as to which registry key(s) are the problematc
ones with regards ot X-Setup.

Thanks again for such a simply solution. And I hope my additional comments
help others figure this out.

To register the WU service:

Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll
Click OK.

If that doesn't work then you may want to give these a try:
!! Be sure to click OK or hit ENTER after each one !!

1-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
net.exe stop wuauserv

2-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll

3-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s wups.dll

4-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll

5-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll

6-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll

7-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll

8-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s jscript.dll

9-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s atl.dll

10-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s softpub.dll

11-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s msxml3.dll

12-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
net.exe start wuauserv

Reboot and try the Windows Update site again.

Both methods work fine. You can either set AU to Automatic in services.msc or
you can run "regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll".

MS, you really need to update the error message.

I take it back. I'd turned off AU, reran WU, and got the same error again.
This time, I turned AU back on and now WU works.

Torgeir, it seems pretty conclusive that MS is forcing AU to be on in order
to run WU, at least in this version of Win2K.

Thanks Miko, nothing else worked. I set all 3 services to automatic, toggled
endlessly in the Control Panel Applet the AU setting... nothing worked.

This fixed the issue:

regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll

Ok, I've tried services.msc, BITS is started. Automatic Updates was
"Disabled". I make the "Automatic" - but when I hit "Apply" it usually
goes back to "Disabled".
On the infrequent occasions that it stays "Automatic", I then go START
and it gives me error 1058.
Next, I try "regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll" and I get the "Succeeded"
message. But stil no I still get error 0x8DDD0018.
Any ideas?

You should first try to run the System File Checker -
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

If that doesn't resolve the issue, try this:
http://www.wsuswiki.com/ProceduretomanuallyRe-InstallAutomaticUpdateClient

To open a Command Prompt go to Start > Run > type in cmd and then click
OK or press Enter
Copy the command shown on the above page and then *right* click after
the prompt, choose Paste, and then press Enter.

IF Automatic Updates still stays at Disabled then there is a serious
issue going on. Either there's 2 software firewalls running at the same
time, there is malware resident on the system, or you need to do a
Repair Installation.

You may receive an error message that contains the "0x8DDD0018" code or
the "0x80246008" code when you try to download updates from the
Microsoft Windows Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910337

Can the Automatic Update service be started ? If not and attempting to
do so results in a 1058 error code, than the system is infected with
malware. Using Internet Explorer, go here and have the system scanned:

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

If Vundo/Virtumonde/Zlob/and/or SDBot are detected, than you'll need
futher assistance in getting the system cleaned up -
