Matt ... not sure what to advise you. There are only a couple of posts
with the same issue you are experiencing. Is the system activated ?
Not sure why the PID is not being read correctly.
What does the WindowsUpdate.log, located in %windir%, show ?

Only glitch I've had since install a few weeks ago, and it just started
recently.
By any chance are you also running OneCare?

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1505.0
Engine Version: 1.1.2101.0
Definition Version: 1.15.2224.9
Frustrated here... the dreamscene preview is not reported under windows
update, but no error is reported there either. Have tried updating the
defender definition files from within defender and from security center.
The only reference I can seem to find to that error code appear to be from
those with hacked copies... and mine is most definitely not.
Really? ; }

Check the context of the error? (Ref. KB902093)
BTW I think there is a separate web forum which specializes in licensing problems.
Good luck

Does it deal with Vista licensing too, Robert ?
Instead of me attempting to guess just why the log is showing that the
PID is invalid, you are entitled to free support for issues with
security updates. The update to Defender is a security update.
Call !!!

DO NOT EVEN MENTION Dreamscene as it is NOT security related. Let them
work out why the system is not being detected as valid. ;)

Robert, my assumption is that you're telling me that my system believes I
have some "other" product with an invalid license on my system. That is not
the case.
I only brought up the fact that I can't see dreamscene as possibly another
symptom of my problem. If only there was a way to reinstall defender...
Thanks again!
No. I'm just telling you that the code does have a documented meaning.
Now you can see that as well it is being used somewhat consistently
with the other symptoms of your case. E.g. Donna has already given
you an example of why the code might have been used: Beta products expire.
More significantly, the PID you found (all zeros) was invalid. Etc.

Well, this isn't the right newsgroup for helping with that either. ; )
However, perhaps an effective start would be to find where
that PID is being stored and compare it with what a similar machine
which is working properly has there. Your OEM support could hopefully
handle that latter request if you have no other machines to compare with?
Use ProcMon to show you the registry accesses.
I suspect that all zero number may be easily evident
but in any case with ProcMon you can use its interleaved
FileMon trace records to correlate the registry accesses with
the writes to the diagnostic logs.
Good luck
Robert

Paul
Ik had exactly the same problem on a brandnew DELL laptop (1 week old, of
course with fully legal version Vista Home Premium, activated and
registrated).
In my situation the de-activation of Microsoft Update in the security centre
solved the problem.
After de-activation Windows Update suddenly saw the most recent update for
Defender and updated without problems.
Seems that Microsoft update itselves causes a compatibility issue with
Vista.....
Have put the Communities page in my favourites.
