I get the above error immediately after the message saying
it's checking for new versions of the update software.

There's a reference to an error with this number in the
Windows Update trouble shooter, but it does not seem to be
the same problem (The one in the troubleshooter is an MSUS
error and affects XP clients).

I've also had a very similar problem with XP, it would
fail with an error immediately after checking for new
versions of the update software, though the error number
is different in the XP case.

Has anyone else encountered this?, or know of a workaround?

I'm currently using W2k SP3, IE 6 SP1, and it also
occurred with W2k SP2 and IE5

Stuart,

Error 0x80190194 translates to HTTP Error 404 "Not Found". Typically this
is related to connectivity. How are you accessing the Internet?

IE > Tools > Internet Options > Connections
Disable both "Automatically Detect Settings" and "use Automatic
configuration script"

1. Open Internet Explorer click Tools / Internet Options.
2. Click the Advanced Tab
3. Under Security, select both of the following check boxes:
- SSL 2.0
- SSL 3.0
4.Under HTTP Settings Remove the check (disable) from use HTTP 1.1
5. Place a check (enable) in Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections
6. Refresh Internet Explorer and attempt to access the Windows Update site
again
7. If you are still unable to install updates, try enabling both HTTP 1.1
and HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections checked.
8. Refresh Internet Explorer and attempt to access the Windows Update site
again
9. If you are still unable to install updates, try disabling both HTTP 1.1
and HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections checked.
10. Refresh Internet Explorer and attempt to access the Windows Update site
again

Lucy,

I'm in a corporate network, and access the internet via a
proxy (Microsft's ISA Server). I've been able to use
Windows Update from behind this proxy before, and I can
run Windows Update on other machines inside our network.
I also have no problems accessing any other sites from
this machine.

Regards,
Stuart

I've figured it out.

It turns out that we actually had an Update Server running
on our domain controller, and so the error was coming from
that server, and not Microsoft's Update server.
I've contacted our administrator, and he's going to sort
it out.

Thanks for your help, your response helped me figure out
where to look to find out what was going on (I ended up
using a packet sniffer, which is how I noticed the
involvement of the domain controller).

It would be nice though, if future versions of the windows
update software could give you some indication of whether
or not you're connected to the Micorsoft server, or to an
internal one...so that queries could be directed to the
appropriate place.

Regards,
Stuart
