Brand New Installation -- No Paging File

I just installed XP Home, SP1, SP2, and many of the post-SP2 updates. I
only have about 5 other programs installed. This morning when I booted, I
got an error about NO PAGING FILE. Curiously, my laptop with MCE has the
same problem, amongst other problems.

I'm thinking it must be one of the updates. What else?

Could someone please help me solve this? Thank you.

You have looked in My
Computer-Properties-Advanced-Performance-Settings-Advanced to see what the
setup for the pagefile is, haven't you?

Yes, of course; On this machine, it's manually set to 960 - 1920. (On the
MCE machine, it was set for windows to automatically determine).
