Yes, I found the same problem under the same circumstances. I am a Windows
2000 Pro user and I have installed the recent roll-up. This is most annoying!

I am also a windows 2000 Pro user, version 5.00.2195 SP4.
Single Intel processor.
Running McAfee, Ad-Aware, .Net framework 1.1, Microsoft Visual Studio .Net
2003, Microsoft Office 2003, Microsoft Access 2000, Microsoft Office Outlook
2003, Microsoft Project Standard 2003 SP1, VMware 3.1.1, ... what else should
I list?

Still no answer from email support, the problem still exists, and local IS
can't find a solution.

I've been dealing today with a MS technician who's tried very hard. He's
moved me past the 0xc8000202 message but only to where I now get 0xc8000408.

I've done a bit of research myself and it's seeming to point me in a certain
direction, and that is that there apparently should be a name SYSTEM within
the Sharing or Security permissions for the C disk and it should be permitted
to do anything it likes. I've only got the name Everyone and when I try to
add the name SYSTEM it won't do it, giving me instead the message "Unable to
display the user selection dialog (null).

It was further suggested that this inability to add SYSTEM was caused by
having an out of date verison of riched32.dll. At this point I started to
get a bit lost because, even if this is the reason, I don't know where to get
a better version of it. I've run SFC but suspect that this somehow did more
harm than good.

I'm running Office 2000 (Word, Excel and Outlook mainly), Maxthon IE-based)
is my browser of choice, with lots of other odds and ends too numerous to
mention (Skype, Sage accounts, NetObjects Fusion 7). I'm right up to date
with updates so no immediate panic. I'm assuming that if a new critical fix
comes out I could just download it and apply it manually (??). I would hate
to have to upgrade to XP just to get out of this as I give support to a
number of users virtually all of whom are W2K. Just when you thought it was
safe to go back in the water ......

Not sure on the 0xc8000408 error, but the 0xc8000202 seems to be due to a
faulty install of windows update. MY
%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.log had entries similar to:

"{4687AAD8-5ABF-40ED-835C-7B9B7A7650D5} 2005-07-20
10:07:05-0600 1 148 101 {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} 0 c8000202 WindowsUpdate Failure Software
Synchronization Error: Agent failed detecting with reason: 0xc8000202"

The solution that worked for me (thanks Alex Xie) was as follows.

I ignored step one which was turn off your virus checker (McAfee is fine,
some other products may cause problems, running with as few other programs as
possible is a good idea). You want to rename/delete
%windir%\SoftwareDistribution because it's garbage and you want a new one to
be installed/downloaded. If you're having trouble deleting/renaming the
folder you can use a program like that available from
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html which allows you
to close a handle that another process has on a file. One of the SVCHost.exe
processes should have a handle on the folder, just select that File handle
and close it, no other processes "should" have handles on the folder. Once
you've removed/deleted that folder, just reboot and head back to the windows
update site and hopefully you should be able to update smoothly.

Step 2: Check the local Windows Update services.

This issue can occur if three services have not been configured correctly.
Please refer to the following steps to check them:

1. Click Start->Run, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the

3. Click on the Log On tab, please ensure the option "Local System account"
is selected and the option "Allow service to interact with desktop" is
unchecked.
4. Check if this service has been enabled on the listed Hardware Profile. If
not, please click the Enable button to enable it.
5. Click on the tab "General "; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic".
Then please click the button "Start" under "Service Status" to start the
service.

Step 3: Rename the temporary folder of Windows Update.

Very grateful for your concise instructions. I wear many hats, even as an
MCSE I had to search awhile for intelligent help. Many thanks.
