There's may be fix for that by editing the registry. If you feel uncomfortable
with that, it would be better to ask Windows Update to hide this update,
and wait for the next release of WGA Notifications, coming soon.

A potential fix has been posted several times in this newsgroup. Here it is
again:

A problem with registry key permissions may cause the installation of
KB905474 to fail.

These permissions can be repaired using Registry Editor as follows:

1. Click Start, and then click Run
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK
3. Expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
4. Locate the subkey HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck
5. Right-click the subkey and select Permissions..
6. Ensure that groupname Administrators allowed Full Control
permission
7. Ensure that username SYSTEM allowed Full Control permission
8. Repeat steps 3-7 for the subkey
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck.1

If that does not fix your problem, please post the contents of your file

C:\WINDOWS\WgaNotify.log

in a follow-up in this thread, preferably as an attachment rather than
pasted in-line.

I have checked everything below and it is as it should be. My query is that
in MS Update it says failed to install, yet in Add/remove progs it says
installed. Which Am I to believe?

If the system passes Validation than it successfully installed. Was
there a failed attempt to install it from MU and then was it installed
manually ? If so, then it will not show as being installed on the MU
Update History page but will show the failed attempt.
Advise you to wait a couple of days ... say, until Tuesday or so, for
the latest version to appear if the system can not pass Validation.

I too have Error 80070005 on failed installation of KB905474. No entry for
this KB file in CP>Add & Remove. The registry changes suggested earlier work
but 905474 still will not install.
The version of 905474 I am using was downloaded 12 hrs after its initial
exposure on the WU website. It occurs to me to delete this file and download
a later version, but I cannot find it on my PC (Win XP Pro + SP2).
Q1. How can I delete the downloaded bút uninstalled 905474?
Q2. Any other curative ideas to try?

MowGreen says to wait until tomorrow when a new version of
Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications should be presented.

Q2 - wait for the replacement.
Q1 - replacement should be set to knock out original.

Regrettably on Wed (3 May) WU still insists in attempting to install the
earlier version of 905474 already on my PC. As the file is not available
elsewhere for manual installation may I reiterate my earlier Q1 (How do I
delete the version downloaded but which fails installation?) so that WU will
download the improved version of 905474?

I've been eyeing that too. Well, I guess MowGreen's timetable has
turned out to be inaccurate. See if (despite WU's report) it's in
add/remove's list of updates. You need a check in the 'show updates'
box at the top - if 905474 is listed it will be down at the bottom.
If it's there, you need to use system restore to remove it. This would
leave it downloaded but not installed. Past that I can't help Q1.

I've asked WU to hide the update, using the hide check box.
Now when I check at WU, I need to disregard this notice:
(Yellow Exclaimation Point!) *Important*
You've hidden important updates
You've asked us not to show you one or more high-priority updates but your computer might be at risk until they are installed.
Restore them now

I strongly feel my computer might not be at risk so I ignore it.

Note that the background Automatic Updater does not immediately download
newly available updates, because the Automatic Update agent is regulated by
the update server has to how and when it is permitted to download (so as to
spread the load). So Automatic Update might not pick up this new version
for some days or weeks yet (during which time, if you have a downloaded
update not yet installed, it will keep prompting to be installed).

If you go to the Microsoft Update web site and click on the Custom button,
then this *will* re-evaluate all newly available updates versus what is
currently installed in your system. You will be offered the latest version
of all available updates (unless you have previously hidden them). If you
have an out-of-date version of any given update already downloaded but not
yet installed, it should be superseded by a new download.

Thank you, Robin, for your explanation and assurance that selecting from the
Custom list will ensure that any new versions of updates are offered.
In this instance it seems that MowGreen was a little premature on the
release of the new version, though in all fairness he advised that if
Validation was failing we should wait "a couple of days....say, until Tuesday
or so, for the latest version to appear".
I am not sure, in any case, that my PC is failing Validation as I find it
difficult to see how it could even attempt to validate my OS until the
Notification files have been installed. My problem is that 905474 fails
installation entirely (and is not recorded on CP>Add or Remove). Given that
no other update has ever failed to install on this PC - including the myriad
WGA validation checkers which have been thrust upon me through WU and
individual Downloads since SP2 was installed - it will be interesting to see
what happens when the next version of this WGA update eventually emerges.
Have you any other suggestions as to why the installation may be failing
which I can be checking in the meantime?

You are correct - your PC is not failing validation.

> My problem is that 905474 fails installation entirely

A potential fix has been posted previously in this newsgroup. Here it is
again:

A problem with registry key permissions may cause the installation of
KB905474 to fail.

These permissions can be repaired using Registry Editor as follows:

1. Click Start, and then click Run
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK
3. Expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
4. Locate the subkey HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck
5. Right-click the subkey and select Permissions..
6. Ensure that groupname Administrators allowed Full Control
permission
7. Ensure that username SYSTEM allowed Full Control permission
8. Repeat steps 3-7 for the subkey
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck.1

If that does not fix your problem, please post the contents of your file

C:\WINDOWS\WgaNotify.log

in a follow-up in this thread, preferably as an attachment rather than
pasted in-line.

Thank you Robin - I tried the Permissions fix first. None of them were
assigned, and I had high hopes that assigning Full Control would solve the
problem after a reboot. It did not, though the Permissions remained as I had
changed them.

WGANotify.log is a real mine of information (I now know where WU keeps its
downloaded files prior to installation). Comparing the log entries for my 8
failed attempts to install 905474 with a successful installation logfile from
another PC suggests that the problem lies in a failure to update the
registry. This resulted also in the laconic comment "Windows XP has been
partially updated and may not work properly", but I have yet to detect any
resulting problem.

I would welcome your advice on the logfile entries but am lost as to how to
attach the file to my reply. My version of the MS NewsReader has no visible
button in any pane I can find to allow me to make an attachment. The
NewsReader Help file simply does not mention attachments. Please correct me
if I am wrong. Otherwise I can send the file to you at your Cambridge email
address, if this works.

Yes, in that case it will be yet another different registry permissions
problem. No need to show me the WgaNotify.log file - I can guess what it
says.

It is a mystery as to how all these registry permissions problems occur.
The problems showing up when you try this update are pre-existing (not
caused by the update itself). How did they happen? A default configured
Windows should not have these problems. Is there something in common
between all the users who suffer this problem? Do they use the same
anti-virus product? Or have they all suffered some malware attack in the
past which has left permissions errors in the registry?

If you are interested in pursuing a further diagnosis (and maybe even a
fix), e-mail me privately.

I'm having the same problem with the exception that nothing is wrong with
permissions. I don't know how to attach the WgaNotify.log to this post. I'm
not even sure how to read it. When I try to reregister the "stuff" My
anti-security notifies me that window update is causing problems.

Please do not allow any third-party anti-anything application to interfere
with the correct operation of Windows Update. Disable, or if necessary,
uninstall anything that is interfering.

Your profile slowness is probably caused by a problem similar to the one
logged above, whereby wgatray.exe is launched every time you log in and
cannot complete correctly.

Please post this problem in the WGA forum at:
http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=442&SiteID=25
where they will probably have a quick fix for you.

Did you read it? Yes/No.
Did you try the suggestion? Yes/No

If you read it and the suggestion did not help, are you going to explain
what exactly is your error code?

Please try this: download and install:

This wizard should take care of the issue. I am not a Microsoft employee. I
had to search to find this fix on other threads for the exact same issue on
my pc. You will not see the error after this.

the image -- down time I do not have time for!

Vincenzo, if I may ask, how did you figure out where to find the standalone
package? I have a subscription to TechnetPlus and presumably it is on one of
my DVDs that arrived this week or I should be able to somehow make use of the
reference materials to aid my search. Anything you can do to help make me
more self-sufficient would be appreciated!

Thanks again for your help.

That file is not in TechnetPlus DVD, RobCoh.
Robin found it (I think) on the WGA forum at:

I like, every body else on this site have been battling for days to install
the WGA. Out of sheer desperation and after trying every ‘fix’ I read about
on this site I switched off system restore and I was able to install the
update without any problems what so ever.

If your system is having difficulties with 905474, then please download and
install:

http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3-19990518/cabpool/windowsxp-kb905474-enu-x86_4bafa8793e8cdcaf4ba4ffc494df32d496154544.exe

Then re-boot Windows. Does this solve your problem?

I read that post on 9 June; followed the instructions: downloaded the file,
installed it (it installed successfully), and rebooted my machine. Result: I
was unable thereafter to connect to my ISP at all. Robin Walker was replying
to M Ganesh Prasad. It took me many hours, and two different System Restores,
before I was able to connect again to my ISP, and thus to the Internet. I
hoped M Ganesh Prasad wasn't having the same problems I was. I noted also
that apparently Windows Update doesn't recognize this kind of installation -
or does it? I'm not sure.

> Then re-boot Windows. Does this solve your problem?

It *made* problems for me - severe ones; everything else worked, but I
couldn't connect to the Internet, which means, unable to pick up my mail,
update Windows, or do anything else useful or important.

It seems to me this is a problem created by Microsoft, that the problem is
"widely applied," if I may call it that (I'm *not* a computer-oriented
person, and I really have to sweat to learn anything, but I have some
knowledge of how the world works, which is what suggests to me: why not
withdraw (somehow?) this KB905474, and put something more appropriate or
useful in its place? Or just get rid of it?)

Carol, of the hundreds of people who have applied the above fix with
success, you are the only one reporting this subsequent problem. Might it
be possible that there is something else wrong with your system? Many many
other people had their problems completely solved by the above fix with no
side effects.

The fix above is only for 905474 being given error number 80242006. If the
problem that you were seeing was different to this, then the fix above will
probably not help.

> I noted also that apparently Windows
> Update doesn't recognize this kind of installation

That is normal. Manually applied updates do not feature in Windows Update
History.

Hello,
From my reading of Microsoft's paper concerning "KB905474", this is "at this
time" user's choice and does not need to be installed to use Windows Genuine
Advantage.

Remove this item in the update section by using "custom install" and
checking off this download. The site should then list this as a critical
update not to install and have a message indicating your choice.

I have opted to not install "KB905474" and have no problem downloading
security and regular "free" Microsoft listed items, such as "Tweakui",
"PhotoPlus3" etc.

I strongly doubt it, as all Windows checks and other checks show my system
in superb operating order, and *only* installing that file caused me
problems. Possibly I have conflicting software on my system. Or maybe some
who applied the suggested fix can't get online again to report it?

Many many

I expect that's so, but not all systems are the same.

That was not mentioned in the question nor in your reply. I can't find an
error code anywhere in the two-dozen times or so I've tried to install KB
905474 (and failed). I need better (more complete) information if I'm to fix
this at my end.

> If the

I had no error code. I had no download. I had only the indication that the
install failed. When I clicked on the red "Failed" icon I got nothing at all.
(That, from the Microsoft Update (Windows Update) site.

Thanks for the information. I assume, though, that a machine with the file
installed won't cause Microsoft Update to try to send it again; is that right?

Although your statistical method doesn't pass muster with me (I'm not a

P.S. Sorry to confuse the issue here; my cousin posted the first message for

If you get no popup when you click the red "Failed" icon in the Status
column, then you might have on your system some third-party popup-blocker
which is obstructing the correct operation of Windows Update. Please
disable all popup-blockers and try clicking the red "Failed" icon again for
the information. There are popup-blockers contained within (for instance)
Google toolbar, some anti-malware applications, and some firewalls.

Also, please post the most recent section of
C:\WINDOWS\WgaNotify.log
(you will see it is divided into sections, one installation attempt in each,
by date). This might reveal the cause of the failure.

> I assume, though, that a machine with the

WGA Notify KB905474 will appear again as an available update when Microsoft
release to Windows Update a version of WGA Notify which has a greater
version number than the one that is currently on the system.

I have no insider knowledge, but I'm guessing that there are going to be
future revisions of WGA Notify to iron out the installation problems that
have been discovered this time around.

Great information! Thanks! However, doesn't MSIE pop up a yellowish box near
the top of the screen when it blocks a popup? I have only one toolbar in
MSIE; that's the RoboForm toollbar, and I believe it doesn't block popups.
Nor does my firewall (ZoneAlarmPro, current version). All the same, I'll go
exploring (no pun intended). I'm using Windows Defender Beta 2 - would THAT
block popups in Windows Update?

> Also, please post the most recent section of

Fabulous! I'll go looking for it, and do that - well, I'll post the most
recent stuff from it.

That's really helpful; thanks, Robin!

That makes sense to me; I imagine Microsoft staff are in a state of severe
overload right now; I'd laugh if it were funny; haha!

> Robin Walker [MVP Networking]
> rd...@cam.ac.uk

Thanks again, Robin! I'm off to do some experimenting, and at least look up
that log file and try to post from it. Also, to go to Windows Update and try
clicking on the Failed icon, and see if I can get rid of any popup blockers.
(I'll pass this on to my cousin CarolW also; sorry for the name change; we
share the computer, but I'm the one she dumps everything on [g] - but maybe I
could get her to do some of the work, sometimes.)

I see my WgaNotify.log isn't anything like complete; the last entry in it is
the one from the time I downloaded the recommended file manually, and then
installed it; it did install, but after the reboot, I couldn't get online
(see CarolW's earlier post, above).

Here's the date and time of that:

| 0.125: 2006/06/09 02:44:22.490 (local)

and the first few lines:

| 0.125: f:\41d924842c5004008a98\update\update.exe (version 6.2.29.0)
| 0.141: DoInstallation: GetProcAddress(InitializeCustomizationDLL)
Returned: 0x7f
| 0.141: Hotfix started with following command line:
| 0.157: CreateUserInterface: GetProcAddress for DefineInstallCustomUI
failed: 0x7f

It's a long log; do you want the whole thing? Posted? There are a number of
other errors indicated, with a number of other (error?) codes, too.

(I'd thought it was installed, after the initial install, before the reboot,
seemed to be successful, but apparently there were problems, which then
prevented me from going online.)

I tried this. I checked my popup blocker in MSIE; it's turned off. I checked
everywhere else I could think of on my system; no popup blockers active,
except maybe in Firefox, which I'm not using, though it's installed as my
default browser.

Went to Microsoft Update; was shown KB905474 as update, chose Express (I
usually choose custom); clicked on Install; again got the same error message
"unable to be installed; failed." Told to Review History, which I did; got
the failed icon, clicked on it - looked for popup blocker - nothing. No
popup, either. I tried right-clicking; nothing happened.

Eventually, I logged off (closed MSIE). Went to look at WgaNotify.log. It
hasn't changed since the last bit shown in my previous post, so it's not
being added to at all, through numerous update attempts since I downloaded
the file you suggested and "installed" that (but though I'd thought it had
installed, it clearly failed during the reboot that followed; also, something
had failed before the reboot). I suppose it wouldn't be good just to rename
or move or delete the WgaNotify.log file?

Up to the time I downloaded the file you recommended, it does seem to say

It does, for obviously malicious pop-ups, but MSIE should not be blocking
the Windows Update pop-up, which derives directly from a user click.

I thought that at one stage ZAP *did* attempt pop-up blocking.

Windows Defender does not block pop-ups on my PCs

Thanks for the hint! I've just set ZAP to notifiy me if a pop-up gets

let you know what happens.

As far as I know, not on ours, either.

Just the last one, that resulted from trying to install the
specially-downloaded file you recommended, or the whole log? The whole log is
172 lines, some very long ones.

I found the place in ZAP for pop-ups, and enabled everything for
microsoft.com, and then went to Microsoft Update again and tried again to get
KB905474. It failed again; I clicked on Review History and got that, but
again when I clicked on the red Failed icon, I got nothing. Also, my
WgaNotify.log remains un-appended to; the last entry is still the one from
having tried to install the file I downloaded and then ran.

different; tell me if you want the whole 172 lines.

Thanks, that one looks like a successful installation.

As you can see, it only updates three files, WgaLogon.dll,
LegitCheckControl.dll, and WgaTray.exe, none of which should affect your ISP
connection.

The first network activity after a reboot will be that WgaTray.exe will
attempt to connecto to Microsoft to determine whether it should disable
itself, or run normally. I think that there might be an interaction with
ZAP here, and I wonder whether that interation might be causing the ISP
connectivity problem.

If you try installing the manually downloaded update again, try this
sequence:

- take a System Restore checkpoint to which you can easily return if things
go wrong;
- disable ZAP;
- run the updater;
- reboot (keeping ZAP disabled throughout);
and see whether you now have connectivity to your ISP.

If that works, you can try configuring ZAP to allow internet connections
from WgaTray.exe, and they should then co-exist more happily.

This helped my problem. The odd thing is: my history showed that I had
already installed this update prior to today. Yet, for some reason WU was
trying to install it again - and the automatic "re-install" was failing.

No worries, as long as I've stopped WU from bugging me about making this
update, I'm in good shape. Thanks!

It *does*? Haha; that's a new one on me, though it did look as though it had
installed before the reboot.

Okay. There was something about timing. We're on dial-up. On reboot, we go
offline, and don't get back online till we specify going online.

I can do that.

Ah, you mean after I've downloaded the recommended file, and gone offline;
right?

> - run the updater;

that is, the downloaded file; right?

> - reboot (keeping ZAP disabled throughout);

I can set it not to load on startup; as long as I stay offline, that should
be okay.

> and see whether you now have connectivity to your ISP.

Okay. Then I'll have to start ZAP before going online - and it should ask me
about WgaTray, or whatever it is, and I can allow WgaTray then, right?

> If that works, you can try configuring ZAP to allow internet connections

If I have the order of events right here, then perhaps this would work,
without exposing the machine (really, Carol's not mine, but I use it when I'm
here, so I have to work for the privilege [g])

I'll try this and get back to you.

Back again; I downloaded the file - and called Carol in on this; it's her
machine. She's worried about this:

so far, so good;

Potential problem here - on reboot, after initial install of the updater
(the downloaded file, right?)

> - run the updater;
> - reboot (keeping ZAP disabled throughout);
> and see whether you now have connectivity to your ISP.

with ZAP disabled? No way, says Carol. But suppose I enable the Windows
firewall instead? But Carol's worried about having two firewalls even
installed! ZAP is pretty finicky.

So many computer-people say not to *install* two firewalls (of course, the
Windows one is probably installed anyway, just not enabled if ZAP is enabled,
right?)

> If that works, you can try configuring ZAP to allow internet connections
> from WgaTray.exe, and they should then co-exist more happily.

Now that Carol is worried, so am I. We're expecting support from Microsoft;
don't know they'd do any better than you, Robin! And the support will
probably be slow coming (I wonder why! haha)

Do you have any comments on the proposal to disable ZAP and enable the
Windows firewall in its place? Remember we're on dial-up, so on the reboot,
if we get some notice from WgaTray.exe, we'll be offline to begin with, and
have to go online, which will take a minute or two. There were various notes
about timing in the log I posted.

Do you have any additional thoughts? Carol and I are both over our heads here.

Thanks!

That would be good, for the first re-boot after the installation. Once you
have satisfied yourselves that you have connectivity without ZAP, then you
can try turning off Windows Firewall again, and re-enabling ZAP.

Thanks, Robin! That's the approach we'll take, then. I'll try to get back to
you with a report. We might not do this today, as it's Windows Update day [g]

If we disappear completely, you'll know we're disconnected [haha]

We're back, with KB905474 installed; no problems visible.

We did just that. But first, we did all the regular Windows Updates put up
today, in which KB905474 failed. We just didn't pay any attention to that.
Then we proceeded with the plans as you approved; the installation worked. We
rebooted, went online; no problem. Went offline, changed back from the
Windows Firewall to ZAP - and went online again - no problem. Set ZAP to
start up with Windows again, and rebooted; no problems. So, thanks very much!

Here are the first two text-lines of WgaNotify.log:

0.125: 2006/06/13 12:04:15.156 (local)
0.125: f:\f120b0782fb39914147a\update\update.exe (version 6.2.29.0)

We are happy. Thanks! Especially for your patience with us, as we don't like
to be confused, but often are.

You can check C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log to see why updates are not being
offered. There were many updates released on June 13th.

To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you.

Is Automatic Updates enabled? If so, is Automatic Updates also offering you
934238 or any other update?

Are you running a non-English version of Windows XP and are you seeing
English text in the print dialog box when you print something?

Is Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 listed in Add/Remove Programs? If it so, do
you also have.NET Framework 3.0 Language Packs installed?

No more logs, please.

To make a long story short, don't worry about it. You don't need 934238.

The machine would only need 934238 installed if (1) it's a non-English
version of Windows XP *and* (2) you are seeing English text in the print
dialog box when you print something.

I think it'd be best if you relied on Automatic Updates to offer updates the
machine needs instead of trying to pick & choose updates you think it
/might/ need, my friend.

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in WinXP:

I don't know. I do know that, based on what you've told me in your replies
here, you do not need this update. You have two (2) choices:

1. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and do a Custom scan for updates
> Uncheck this update and "hide" it;

or...

2. Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
