Several months ago (July) I had Windows XP reinstalled by a vendor. They also
installed SP3. Then I installed MS office 2003 and other MS products myself
using standard installation. I do not know what method the vendor used for
the XP and SP3 installation.

Now when Microsoft Update or Automatic Update runs, only fixes for the
products I installed are presented for download. These fixes have been
downloaded and installed correctly by Update. No updates for Win XP or any
of its components have been presented for download since the reinstall.

The output from Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer shows the last update
for XP is from July for the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - July
2008 (KB890830). This tool has been updated twice since then and was included
in the last two monthly patch sets

MS Update runs as if Win XP is not registered with it.

A scan using Belarc Advisor shows 15 missing hotfixes based on 09/09/2008
Microsoft Security Bulletin summary.

Is it possible that my system has needed any fixes since July?

How can I make Microsoft Update (re)scan for and detect the needed fixes?

Check Add/Remove Programs to see if you have, say, update 950974 installed
(which was released in August).

If not, post the last hundred or so lines from WindowsUpdate.log (usually found
in c:\windows).

Are these hotfixes or security updates? Does it tell you the KB numbers?

Harry.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP
installation or you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

Method 1 should square you away, judging by the log you posted in a further
reply to this thread.

I have tried both Method 1 and 2 from KB943144. There is no change in MS
Update's operation.

This is a new one on me. Anyone seen this before?

What anti-virus and/or firewall software do you have installed?

It's possible that it is Belarc itself interfering with Microsoft Update,
although I'd be surprised to find this was the case. Just to eliminate the
possibility, would you mind uninstalling Belarc, restarting the machine, and
going to Microsoft Update again. If it still doesn't work, post your
WindowsUpdate.log again, starting from when you rebooted the machine after
uninstalling Belarc. If it does work, please let us know.

This one seems to be normal, at least Microsoft Update produces the same error
for me but still presents updates.

PA Bear,

My problem appears to be similiar to your following post. My version of SP3
is also 20080212.121911. What is the correct version?

Tried what you suggested. No change, update is still not finding fixes for XP
or components.

First tell me if Method 1 or Method 2 in

Where are you seeing this version listed? (It denotes a beta build of WinXP
SP3 released on 12 February 2008. WinXP SP3 Final wasn't released until
early May 2008.)

Did you pay this "vendor" for reinstalling WinXP? Why did you have them
reinstall WinXP? Did you give them the CDs you received when you purchased
your machine?

Neither Method 1 or Method 2 from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
corrected the problem. I still CANNOT get XP fixes.

I am getting the version number by selecting the Windows XP SP3 update under
the Add or Remove Programs, then clicking on "Click here for support
information". I found another PC which installed SP3 via Automatic Update
and its version number is 20080414.031525.

Win XP was reinstalled because I needed to upgrade my firmware. I paid my
vendor to do it because I did not have the time and it would be done while I
was on vacation. I gave them hardware-specific CDs but not my XP because
this is the same vendor that sold me the PC with XP installed by them. They
supplied and installed the SP3 update.

Should I just install the newer SP3 over the older beta version or should I
try to delete the beta first and reinstall the newer SP3?

Thanks for your help PA Bear.

Follow the instructions in the post of mine that you referenced earlier:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/list/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&mid=cfc8267a-205e-43fb-b8a5-c85202a7f68c&sloc=en-us

WinXP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation
http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron/archive/2008/05/08/windows-xp-sp3-read-all-prerequisites-for-a-successful-installation.aspx

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and
e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada. Go to
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=1173 | select "Windows
XP" then select "Windows XP Service Pack 3"

PS: I would have a very serious word with your vendor for having installed a
beta release of WinXP SP3 fully three months after WinXP SP3 final was
released. You were ripped off!

PA Bear, thank you, success. WU appears to be working for XP.

Once the SP3 was removed, Automatic Update immediately started and, after
many reboots, installed SP3, IE7 and all missing hotfixes.

There was just one minor issue with KB953838 for which I started a this new
thread.

I had the same problem after a new PC build with XP Home installed from
scatch.

Windows Update will *eventually* recognise that you need the patches, but it
may take a little time before they appear.

With my old PC, SP3 had been available for a couple of weeks before WU
decided that I needed it. I was just about to download it manually when it
offered it up for installation.

You now have 2 options. Either wait for MS to finally offer the updates, or
manually download them from the Windows Catalogue.

I have come into this thread late, so I do not know the full history. I am
assuming that you have gone to the MS Update web page explicitly and run a
scan. If not, then this should be your first port of call.

Good luck

Martin C

How do i reinstall an old microsoift update that was specifically supplied to
me.
I removed it from my (add/remove) programmes list and now need it back on my
computer. It was sent to me by MS when i had different email address and i.p
address/isp.It is not listed as an update from MS'S website and never has
been.& yes ive searched for the programme that was (remove only) but its not
listed anywhere as publically available.

Im sure the file is still on my computer encrypted or at least the ms index
code ect for it.

Thx!

If it was sent to you, thoue n yshold have kept a copy of it in case you
ever needed to install it again. If you did not - that is your bad. You
will now need to request/acquire it again (unless - as is possible - it
became a part of some service pack later, etc.)

What was the article number (KB######) associated with the update/patch MS
sent you?

To avoid confusion, please begin a new thread about your specific problem
and computer (instead of hijacking someone else's thread from September
2008). State your IE version and full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3;
Vista SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2; Win7; Win7 64-bit) in your first post. Thank
you.

I have mank copies of KB files, dozens if not hundreds. If there a piece of
software i can use to load them as a list that displays the files info?
I know the name of this application that was sent as an update directly to
my computer from MS.However as i allready have said, its not listed as
publically available.I can not contact Microsoft as they have made them
selves unobtainable, unless I pay them just to converse with me.

We really don't care. If you need assistance, begin your own new thread
about your specific problem and computer. State your IE version and full
Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2; Win7; Win7
64-bit) in your first post.

Your newsreader/you are incorrect.

This conversation in its entirety (from September 2008, a couple of
subject-line changes later, to March 17, 2010):
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/browse_frm/thread/2c8f28a1f7a5cf64/

As you can see - jnonca started this conversation. Finished it up in
October 2008. Then - in March 2010 - Privateer jumped in and 'continued'
the conversation.
