Win XP. IE 6. My IE 6 homepage is "locked" -- I cannot change it through IE, or through the INF file, or by the
registry. When I try to change the homepage using regedit, I get a message "CANNOT EDIT START PAGE". Anything I enter for
Dword just reverts.

I probably used a program to lock it. I do not remember.

(1) -- will a locked IE6 homepage prevent me from installing SP3?
(2) -- how do I manually get rid of the homepage lock?

How is this related to Windows Update functionality?

I would NOT attempt to install WinXP SP3 with the machine in this state.

I would like directions on how to fix this problem before attempting to install SP3. Also if possible an explanation for why
SP3 would not install if the homepage is locked. Thanks.

To manually get rid of the home page lock, use the program that you used to lock the home
page to unlock the home page.
If you can't remember what program you installed and used, then do a thorough audit of
your computer system's installed software until you find or remember which program you
used.

Who knows, you might even have a virus which is preventing the change.

I wouldn't attempt to install SP3 on a computer with your problems.

There is a newsgroup for IE issues, perhaps post there.

As for your questions regarding SP3 - you can contact MS.

Thanks Tau -- I'll try posting in the IE newsgroup. I have already done a thorough audit of my installed programs, and have
racked my brain to try to remember what I did. I'll have to fix it manually. And I don't know how. :-(

Try starting your own new thread, not adding a "Will your solution work for
me?" reply to someone else's thread (and who had a totally different
problem):

Go away. Leave me alone. Just don't post to me. At all. Ever. Go be hall monitor on someone else's posts.

You failed to start your own post on the IE Newsgroup as PA Bear pointed out -

I repeat - To manually get rid of the home page lock, use the program that you used to

lock the home
page to unlock the home page.
If you can't remember what program you installed and used, then do a thorough audit of
your computer system's installed software until you find or remember which program you
used.

Who knows, you might even have a virus which is preventing the change.

I wouldn't attempt to install SP3 on a computer with your problems."

If you don't know what you did to lock your home page, how would we know. You can't even
make your own post on the IE Newsgroup providing further information so someone could
assist you there. You have failed to advise what you have installed or any relevant
information and I no longer can be bothered wasting any more time in this vague unrelated
thread which you have posted in the most inappropriate newsgroups nor will I put up with
your continual snide remarks towards my colleague PA Bear.

PS, I'll leave you alone also and hope you find the assistance you require either free or
paid for. Good evening Lady Dungeness from Lady TaurArian.

Rudeness will not be tolerated Lady Dungeness. Your comment is OT and not relevant to your
initial problem.

I suggest you apologise for your continual rudeness to PA Bear.

Au contraire, -- he should apologize to me. For following me, telling others not to help me, and harassing me.

As for your latest posts, you say "I failed to do this, I failed to do that ..." ... maybe I wasn't quite ready. Maybe I
thought I'd wait for an answer on the thread I posted to before posting my own thread. It's not a crime to ask somebody a
question about their thread.

I regret that you've taken offense. I have appreciated your advice in the past. With the one exception of a year or so ago
when you hypothesized that I had "invented" three computers with problems. And I certainly never suggested that anybody on
these newsgroups should know what I did to my computer, nor did I cast any blame except on myself.

As it happens, another post in the other newsgroup focused my attention on a few suspect programs, and provided a link to an
offsite website. In the end, I have solved my problem and am now running on SP3!

To the best of my knowledge, these newsgroups are open to the public and it is permissible for anybody to post wherever they
please. I do appreciate that you and others volunteer your time and advice here. I am sorry that I cannot comply with all
of your directions on where to post and what to post and who to respond to and when to post and when not to post and what not
to say. I'm just not that obedient. I'm a crab, after all. :-)

I was speaking with a person by the name of *fishy* when speaking of the three computers
????

BTW, Robear has never said to anyone not to help you nor has he harrassed you.

I make my decision of my own free will.

Goodnight.
