Your installation issue typically occurs when the previous Microsoft Office
components are corrupt. To correct the detailed error, I suggest that you manually
install these updates. For your convenience, I have listed the steps below.

1. Please download the updates to the desktop. For your convenience, I have listed the link of each update below:

Update for Outlook 2003 (KB913807)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0694380B-DA42-43A0-8D75-5A427A6DB87E&displaylang=en

Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB913161)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1587ded5-a82c-447f-9bb7-2b57554819ef&DisplayLang=en

Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB905756)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ac22f83a-b409-4469-984e-6c19d8f5fe41&DisplayLang=en

2. Double click the downloaded updates to install them.

Note: Have your Office 2003 CD available as you may be prompted to
insert it in the CD drive.

After finishing the above steps, please try to access the Microsoft Update
site again to see whether you have successfully installed the updates.

Thank you. This helped, but the actual problem was that my Office Souce
Engine was disabled.

Arron - I'm having the same problem. Could you tell me how you fixed it,
what the "Office Source Engine" is, and how I can determine if I'm facing the
same issue? Thanks.

Further to my note, above, the install failure is generating an error code
"0x57E". Does anyone know what that code means? I can't find it in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base. Thanks.

This is for Windows XP Home Edition
Right click on My computer
Left click on Manage
Expand Services and Applications
Left Click on Services
Scroll down to Office Source Engine
Double Click on Office Source Engine
Set Startup type from Disable to Automatic
Then click Apply
Then click Start
Then click Ok

That will turn the Office Source Engine on

Arron - Thanks for your prompt response. I set it to automatic and tried to
install the update manually, but it failed again, giving me the following
error message: "Error 1406. Setup cannot write the value Button Text to the
registry key \SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Extensions\{92780B25-18CC-41C8-B9BE-3C9C571A8263}." I guess my
problem is different from yours, but thanks for the help.

Carey - manual installation of the Excel Security Update didn't work for me.
I did as you suggested and the installation still failed, giving me the
following error message:
"Error 1406. Setup cannot write the value Button Text to the registry key
\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Extensions\{92780B25-18CC-41C8-B9BE-3C9C571A8263}." Any other
suggestions would be welcome. Thanks.

Open Microsoft Word and from the Toolbar select:
Help > Detect and Repair...
After the repair operation has finished, visit the Office
Update website and download all applicable updates.

\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet

Thanks.

I have tried for 2 months and voila I have gotten it to work! I followed
some MS instructions but changed a few things and I felt like it was
Christmas! The following instructions include changes because the MS didn't
work. So if it looks familiar try again.
Back up register 1st!
Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. In Registry Editor, locate and then click on my computer
3. On the Edit menu, click Permissions.
4. Under Group or user names, click Everyone.
Note You must add the Everyone group if it is not available. To do this,
follow these steps:a. In the Permission for Office dialog box, click Add.
b. In the Select Users, Computers, or Groups dialog box, click Advanced.
c. In the Select Users, Computers, or Groups dialog box, click Find Now.
d. Under Name (RDN), click Everyone, and then click OK.
e. In the Select Users, Computers, or Groups dialog box, click OK.

5. Under Permissions for Everyone, click to select the Full Control check
box.
6. Click OK.
7. Quit Registry Editor. Restart computer.
8. Run the Setup program for your Office program.

i had the same problem with this month's office updates and in my case i
narrowed it down to a bug in zonealarm, which restricted access to parts of
my registry.
