We brought a computer home from the office which has
Windows NT on it. I'd like to uninstall Windows NT and
install Windows 98 for kids to play games. The computer
currently will boot up and works all the way to the point
where the program icons appear on the desktop then it
freezes. A message box states it cannot find a driver or
server (because it is no longer connected to a network).
Apparently the network was on the E: drive.

Most of the instructions for removing Windows NT I've
found online cannot be performed because Windows NT is
not working. However, I can make a floppy book for
Windows 98 on another computer.

There is software on the computer I would like to save.
I cannot tell what drive or partition it is on because
Windows NT isn't operating. Any suggestions?

To wipe the drive some ways include; boot a win98 startup disk, run fdisk
and delete all partition information found (as long as NTFS is primary). Or
boot the Windows NT CD-Rom or setup disks and when you get to the point,
delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions found, then abort the
install. Or use a utility named delpart. Once removed you can partition and
format the drive as you wish.

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/reskit/nt31/i386/reskit.exe
(The ftp server has been flakey the last few weeks. You may need to start in
the root and drill down to it)

It's not possible to save installed programs and or downgrade to Win98.
You'll need to reinstall.
