I am adding album art to my library of mp3's. I had a bunch of songs that I
had 'Unknown Album' as the album title for, but now when I update these songs
with their correct title and corresponding album art, the pasted art gets
duplicated on all other 'Unknown Album' songs .. even the ones I had already
edited. What can I do to fix this. Seems like a bug to me ....

Are these files all in the same folder or in different folders?

Windows Media Player has no way to differentiate one Unknown Album from any
other Unknown album unless you set the Album Artist field in Advanced Tag
Editor - especially if those files are all in the same folder.

If they are in the same folder, there will be other implications to work
around in the use of Folder.jpg as the displayed art in the library of WMP
11 so it is important to know the folder structure and to have Album Artist
set uniquely for each artist or track.

That raises another question. If the album is unknown, how do you know
which album art to apply?

Hi Dale, thanks for your quick reply. The songs in question are all stored in
different directories on my hard drive. Some of them could be in the same
folder, some not. When WMP decided to find album art for all my songs I
decided to help it and am looking for the original album and album art
myself, by looking it up online (ebay, amazon etc) So what happens is: I have
say 50 songs that now have Unknown Album as the album title, I find the
actual album that it's off of and it's corresponding album art. I then paste
the appropriate album art and after that I open the Advanced Tag Editor to
fill out the rest of the information from the album (or 7") ... After pasting
the art and updating the tag info I go back to my Album view (where still 49
Unknown Albums reside) and now they all show the album art of the one I just
edited. Strangely enough, when I open one of those up and look at Advanced
Tag Editor, Pictures tab, it doesn't show any album art.

Strange?
Workaround?

I'd love to find out!
Thanks again
Rudy

I would suggest editing all of the tag information first - especially album
name, artist, and album artist - and then adding any missing album art.
Windows Media Player uses those three fields for identifying an album when
it is lacking other specific information from the Microsoft/AMG database.
If you paste album art for an album, Windows Media Player will apply that
art to all of the tracks it thinks are in the album based on those three
attributes.

And I appreciate that. Another thing that I forgot to mention is that once I
do edit the artist, album artist and album name and I paste my album art it
works for that one album, but when I edit the second Unknown Album one,
change the three key fields and paste it's album art, this new album art also
gets pasted on the ones I already edited ... that is what the main problem is
...

Just guessing here, but it sounds like all of those tracks are being
considered as one album by Windows Media Player because they originally had
the same album name and same album artist (or no album artist). In this
case, you will have to break the tie between those tracks and your media
library. Currently, the only way I know to do that is to, with Windows
Media Player not running, copy those tracks to a location outside of the
monitored folders by WMP. Then, make a second copy, again outside of the
monitored folders. Now start WMP and, in WMP, delete the original tracks
from your library telling WMP to delete the tracks from your computer as
well.

Next, select one of the two copies of the files to be your working copy.
Leave the other copy untouched just in case something goes awry in all of
this.

In the working copy, use a program such as my ID3 Tag Backup program at
http://www.dalepreston.com/Blog/2007/01/removing-id3-tags.html to remove the
ID3 tags from the tracks. Alternatively, you can save some of your previous
work if, instead of removing the tags completely, you use my ID3 Raw Tag
Viewer at http://www.dalepreston.com/Blog/2007/02/id3-raw-tag-viewer.html to
remove all PRIV and MCDI frames from the ID3V2.3 tags. If you choose this
route, you might want to delete all APIC frames as well - those are the
embedded pictures, including album art.

Now - but don't do it yet - when you move these tracks back into your
library, there will be no connection to anything that the Windows Media
Player library database thought those files were before. They will be new
files as far as Windows Media Player is concerned.

So, now that you have all of these new media files, organize them into the
folder structure that Windows Media Player expects: Library -> Artist ->
Album and then edit all of the ID3 tags in the files making sure, again,
that you have set Artist, Album Artist, and Album Name. Make sure that you
remove any incorrect images from the album folders, leaving only one image,
if you have it, named Folder.jpg. If there are any other images with Album
Art in the name at all, delete them. Images that are not named Folder.jpg
and images that are not going to be interpreted by Windows Media Player as
album art are ok.

While you're at it here, if you have downloaded or identified the correct
album art yourself, you can add those images to the album folders and rename
the files to Folder.jpg in each album folder. Then you can use my ID3 Embed
Pictures program,
http://www.dalepreston.com/Blog/2007/03/id3-embed-pictures.html, to embed
the Folder.jpg into each file.

Hope this helps,

Dale

pfff I better get to work. Thank you very much though for your expertise.
What I was thinking about trying is to copy all Unknown Albums (and the songs
I have already edited) into their own respective folders (still in the
monitored folders of WMP) and see if when these files are in separate folders
it might work better. I noticed today that all the files that show this
behaviour when edited are all in the same directory on my hard drive. Do you
think that has something to do with it?

Thanks again!!

I think you are right. I guess I assumed you had already done that. You
should copy them all to their respective folders, then edit all the track
tags, and then get the album art... in that order.

If that doesn't work then roll up your sleeves and proceed as described.

Why don't you just check the Read-Only checkbox in the ACTUAL file? Right click on the mp3 file in question (once you've done all the modifications you needed of course) and click on properties. At the bottom there is a Read-Only Checkbox. Check it and Windows will not allow any subsequent changes to be made. :)
