that being said, in case that option has something to do
with this issue, my problem is:
media player for some reason WILL NOT use the artist name
that i type into the artist field as the artist folder
name on my hard drive.
i just ripped "Renaissance: Awakening by Dave Seaman". i
set the artist name before i copied the CD
to "Renaissnace" on ALL tracks but media player refuses
to use "Renaissance" as the artist folder name and sets
the folder to "Dave Seaman".
the strange thing is that "Dave Seaman" wasn't even
displayed as the artist when the album info was shown.
i listen to A LOT of "electronica" mix CDs and like to
simplify things by putting the entire album under one
artist ie. "Renaissance, Gatecrasher, Back to Mine"
instead of under each tracks actual artist, which
clutters up my artist list in media library.
is there something i'm missing. and please... don't tell
me i'm going to have to turn off the "get cd info"
option. it would really suck to have to type in all the
track info. *wine*
thx,
.t
is this where media player gets the info for the artist
folder name?
if so, how do i edit the "author" name before i copy a CD
to my hard drive?
when i right click on the album info bar author isn't
listed among the other things like: track, title, length,
genre, copy status, artist, album, composer, and the MANY
other listing options.

well i've gone through properties of the tracks and
seen "dave seaman" listed as "author".

If you want to edit the album information prior to ripping, bring up the the Album information wizard
and click the Edit button. Notice that in addtion to the song title category, there are two hidden
columns, Artist and Composer, that you can show by clicking the links to the right of the song title
header and then add your chosen Artist Name there.
If you want Media Player to reorganize already created files you can use this wizard, however you
need to set a feature that allows Media Player to rename and move files as you designate. Once you
make this change and Media Player moves and renames the files, you can turn the feature back off.
To use this feature, in Media Player, click Tools -> Options, select the Media Library tab and down
near the bottom, check the box labeled "Rename and rearrange music using media information".

Does MP3 ID3v2 have anything similar? I noticed that WMP stuffs the
Album Artist into some obscure field when it attaches an Album Artist
to an MP3.

See http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.
Following up to your post with the resolution is good netiquette.
