An internal application error has occurred
I've tried un-installing and re-installing the WMP 9 application, with no
success. RealPlayer and IRFanview both play media files fine. Registry
check reveals nothing, System file check shows no problems. DirectX
diagnostic (I'm not even sure this has anything to do with WMP) reveals some
uncertified drivers and a registry problem in the Input tab (but I don't
have any input devices, so this may be the problem)
Yesterday, I replaced my old CD RW drive with a new one, and installed the
new burner software. This afternoon, I uninstalled the old burner software
using the uninstall icon in the program folder (Adaptec EasyCD Creator). I
tried to be careful and not remove any shared files (clicking no when
asked). However, it appears to me that something that affects Media player
may now be missing. I can roll back my disk about 48 hrs (I cloned the disk
just prior to the new hardware/software installation), but I'm hoping there
is another, simpler option. No help from the Knowledge Base on this error.
Apparently, it doesn't exist for WMP. I'd like to be able to identify what
is missing and retrieve it rather than restoring the whole OS disk. Any
suggestions?
The questions here help isolate out exactly what's locking up. Presumably

will fix you up, but I'm still curious about the rest.

DirectX version 7 (4.07.00.0716)

Yes, mplayer2.exe plays media files (specifically some mpg files I've been
trying to play)

yes, version 9.0.0.2980

When I use the link above to direct the player to a file on my hard drive (I
have really only been trying to play downloaded files). The sound plays on
an mpg file, but I don't see a picture. The file works fine on mplayer2.exe.

Unfortunately, the error still occurs after unchecking DMA, in the
System:DeviceManager:CDROM:Properties:Settings There is no option for
Digital Audio.
I looked at the link for Windows 9X on the sitre above, but it covers
problems with the CD drive, which seems to be working fine. Don't really
see any advice for my problem.
A note and a question:
Unfortunately, after reading you helpful web page, I've realized I've
committed a re-install error. When the problem first occurred (and
re-starting 98SE didn't fix it), I re-installed WMP 9 over itself (as, it
turns out, is recommended). However, when this didn't fix it, I used the
Software manager to un-install WMP9, then re-installed it (both times I did
the install with freshly downloaded copies of WMP9)
I wonder if there could be an Adaptec plug-in involved? I read a reference
to problems with Adaptec plug-ins on your web site. The discussion didn't
cover my problem, but got me thinking. Could WMP 9 be trying to access or
reference some Adaptec plug-in feature that no longer exists because I
un-installed the Adaptec software? Could there be some un-resolved registry
entry? Should I try re-installing the Adaptec software (though I'm not sure
if it will work, since the software is on the old HP CD RW software disk,
and the software is so old it doesn't support the new Sony CD RW Drive).
Finally, should I update the CD RW driver (which is not a Sony driver, but a
Microsoft driver dated 4-23-99)? I can't think how this would affect the
current problem, however.
Thanks for you help on this.

Do other file types play video using that page? If MPEGs are a known
problem, I'd stay away from them for now, since you'd want to establish
basic functionality before trying the stuff that doesn't work.
The Adaptec software shouldn't matter in this context. WMP installs its own
Roxio(Adaptec) burning plug-in anyways, so that should sort out any
established corruption on that front. You can remove that if you want too,
but I don't know if that's important.
Problems with the CD-ROM should be your chief culprit at this point, as that
should be the biggest unique difference between WMP6, WMPlayer 9 embedded,
and WMPlayer 9 stand-alone. You could try temporarily disabling the CD
drive in Device Manager... ?

On the page you reference, both avi and mpg files play sound, no picture.
and MP3 file also plays. I should mention that what I see when the page
opens is a brief flash of a black square above the box above "set filename",
then the page is uniform gray except for the box and button.
Tried removing the driver in the Device Manager. Without restarting, no
change, still internal application error. After restart, tried updating the
driver with "use windows update" option checked. Driver is the correct
driver.
I agree that it is most likely something associated with the CD Drive, which
is a Sony CRX215A1. The software installed with it is B's Recorder GOLD5
version 5.09.
I could try replacing the new drive with the old drive(without any software
uninstall), to see if I get WMP9 back. If I do find out I get WMP 9 back, I
really don't know what to do. The old drive is a really old drive
(8x/4x/32x), and I really like the speed of the new 48x drive.
Any ideas?

Weird. You shouldn't be seeing video playback failure all over. This
probably isn't helping things. Try turning down video hardware acceleration
by right-clicking on the WMP plug-in, choosing Properties, and moving the
slider down. This probably should help video work embeddedly, but shouldn't
help the stand-alone player, I wouldn't think.

The one above sounds like a good idea.
I could probably sort this out if I had physical access to the box, but
Win9x in general is just not the best OS. Pretty much when people hit this
issue, they're most likely running either Windows 98 or Windows Me. :\
Technical support might be somewhat helpful if nothing else is...
I then tried:
Installing the old CD hardware in place of the new- still got "internal
application error"
Uninstalling the new CD software- still got.....
Reinstalled WMP 9 over itself. Still....
Unfortunately, I may not be able to go back a couple of days as easily as I
thought. A little explanation. I have a removable drive bay, which is a
great little piece of hardware. So when I got Norton Ghost recently, I
cloned my system drive. If something goes wrong, I can pop the removable
in, redirect the CMOS to boot off the clone, and be back in business.
However, the cloned disk seems a bit spotty on booting. I can sometimes
boot off of a cloned drive in the removable bay, but sometimes I get "NAV
cannot locate configuration files" as an error, which causes iexplorer to
crash. I have not figured out whysometimes this happens and sometimes it
doesn't. Anyway, long story short, I wasn't able to try WMP 9 on the "two
days ago" derive, except in safe mode, and in that case I got... (you
guessed it- internal application error).
Maybe I could try downloading 7.1? It would be better than 6.4 at least.
I have thought about upgrading to Windows 2000, but the system I have is
just on the bare edge of being acceptable for W2000 (I think). I have a
PII/400MHz with 128 MB of RAM. I could probably buy a new computer for what
it would take to run W2000 acceptably.
I'll likely re-install the new CD tonight and call it a night. I've learned
over the years that no computer problem is worth losing sleep over (or a
viewing of Six Feet Under). I appreciate your help, and if you have any
thoughts on my situation, thank you.
