(1) Under what settings is the album art retrieved for a track?
When I installed WMP11, I had selected to automatically retrieve additional
info from the Internet.
That process seemed to spend a fair amount of time getting the album art for
the recognized songs.

(2) Is that automatic process the same as retrieving the information
manually by right-clicking a track and:
Find album information: ?
which connects to metaservices.windowsmedia.com and suggests various albums
that you can opt/ to update your track info with (including the album art)

(3) I know that the album images are stored as protected (invisible
nominally but viewable by changing a folder view option) jpg images.
Now I burnt a CD with some MP3 files (but didn't put the associated album
art images on the MP3 CD).
When I view/open that CD in WMP11, it shows the album art beside the tracks.
Since the album art wasn't actually ON that CD, is that artwork just taken
for display from a matching entry in the local HD library??

(4) Since MP3 files can include images as part of the metadata (advanced tag
editor), is there any facility to add in one step, the ASSOCIATED (separate)
album artwork to the metadata of the corresponding mp3 files .. or are there
any legal issues with doing this?

1) It seems to do it whatever the metadata settings are. It's not treated
the same way as text metadata.
2) Yes and no. The album-matching process may yield different results, so
you may get a different set of thumbnails.
3) Possibly. I almost never burn CDs with WMP (for a myriad other reasons)
but there are some changes with v11 (like folder-support when burning CDs)
that I haven't bothered to play with.
4) If you drag-and-drop the album art yourself it adds it to the tags.
That's new in v11. The other method that works in v9-11 is to select all the
album tracks at once, then invoke the Advanced Tag Editor, and then add the
art in one operation. The latter option allows you to add additional art
(like the back cover), but please note that WMP seems to default to using
the alphabetically-first labelled art tag, and "b for back" comes before "f
for front".

Thanks Mike. Interesting answers.
Ahh so the placeholder "Paste Art Here" is a drag/drop feature! I was
looking for a right-click and Paste option on the black image, but there
wasn't one. Neat feature.

I didn't burn the MP3 CD with WMP 11 but use another burner (IOmega HotBurn
Pro) so the art work definitely didn't end up on the CD.
