I have Windows Vista Premium. A new Gateway computer. I cannot get the
Media Player to work on web sites to play music or videos. It is my default
player. I contacted Gateway and they could not help me. This only happens
when Media Player is being used on web sites. I click to play on the web
page but nothing happens. No error messages or anything. I have all
firewalls turned off on the media player. Can anyone help me or tell me how
to solve this problem? It works fine when I play a CD or a DVD.

What is a typical, exact web page address to reproduce the problem ?

A lot of older websites still use addresses for the video location
which begin with "mms://" but since version 9 of media player, this
playback type has been deprecated, and it was removed in media player
11.

I have Windows Media Player 11 for Vista Premium. Here is an example of a
web page that it will not play:
http://fishermansnet.com/ShirleyOremland/Videos/JourneyOfLove.html
It will not play on any web sites that uses any version of Media Player.

Does playing:
http://www.fishermansnet.com/ShirleyOremland/Videos/JourneyOfLove.wmv
directly work?

On the Fisherman site, if you click on the embedded WMP and then right-click
on it, do you get any Error Details?

With the URL listed as you have it with wmv on the end of it instead of html,
it plays. So do I need to change the html to wmv each time I go to a web
site to play something?
Thanks

I right clicked on the web site and got this error message: You've
encountered error message C00D11B1 while using Windows Media Player. The
following information might help you troubleshoot the issue. I have checked
my Device Manager for everything and everything is working fine. All my
updates are up to date. I have already contacted Gateway and they did a check
on my computer online and found nothing wrong. I have even restored my
computer and it still does not work. But, when I changed the html on the end
of the URL to wmv it played the video. So do I have a problem or am I going
to have to change the URL to wmv every time?
Thanks.

When you change the Url ending from HTML to wmv it works. Do I need to do
this everytime I use Windows Media Player? I click on the web site and this
is the error I received: You've encountered error message C00D11B1 while
using Windows Media Player. My computer is working right. Gateway even
checked everything for me online and could not find anything wrong. I have
restored the system and checked out everything and everything is working fine
except for this problem with my media player. Do you have any other
suggestions that may help me. But, changing the url helped.........Thank You.

No, changing the URL would fail miserably to do anything. I'm generally not
available most hours, so I'll respond back when I get a chance.

Click Web Help on that error dialog - what *URL* does it take you to?
That's probably the next key here.

Gateway probably doesn't have the super precise expertise useful here. Plus
remote trouble-shooting is pretty brutally hard.

Here is the URL that the error takes me to:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/webhelp/default.aspx?&mpver=11.0.6000.6344&id=C00D11B1&contextid=230&originalid=800401E3

Everything on that page I have tried. Still does not work.
Thanks for getting back with me on this. I have been looking back on some
other discussions on this same problem. No one so far has a solution
especially since this is Vista we are talking about.

That's interesting - that's Error: Moniker not available -- MK_E_UNAVAILABLE
. It's *relatively* isolated as an error case, but that's still a lot of
code to look through.

Hm, the site is actually technically broken as is since it's sending down
text/plain for the MIME type rather than the correct video/x-ms-wmv --
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#mime
covers how to fix that. If you like this site, you might want to ask them
to fix that.

Does this happen for you on other sites? A different site would be slightly
more interesting in that misconfigured MIME types are potentially their own
source of error.

At what time did this first occur - that is, did it ever work? I don't have
a repro of this issue so I'm working blind here. Excuse my abnormally high
stupidity. =)

Are any third party players installed?
Is networking in Internet Explorer working normally otherwise?
Does the Media Guide in Windows Media Player work?

This has helped me a lot because it has always happened on this web site. I
contacted them about it and they told me it was a Vista problem. My media
player works fine until I go to that web site. The only other players
installed is Real Player and Itunes. Media Player is my default player. I'm
with you I think it is their web site and not my media player since it is
working okay on other sites. If you have any other suggestions, please let
me know. I did talk to a Vista Rep at Circuit City today and he said it
sounded like a plug in problem, maybe one is missing. I checked the plug in
section on my Media Player and everything seems to be okay there, I guess,
since I don't really know what plug ins are. I don't really know what would
be missing anyway. As you can tell, I don't know a lot about the Media
Player, except it is suppose to work. Other than this web site, I don't
think I am having any other problems. Again thanks. If I have further
problems, I will let you know. I hope you understood what I was trying to
say in this message.

You have the right plug-in since WMP is showing up. =)

Cool - if it's just this web site, it's often very easy to look up a contact
on the site and tell them that their MIME type is misconfigured, point them
to the MSDN article here about how to fix it, and then voila, it might work.

Thanks so much for your help. I will notify them about their problem. If
they don't fix it, it won't me any loss to me. I just won't go to that web
site. Again, thanks for clearing this up for me.

I have a Gateway also with Windows Vista Premium and cannot play the embedded
player on websites and it is my default player.
http://fishermansnet.com/ShirleyOremland/Videos/JourneyOfLove.html doesn't
work and other sites don't work either. I have tried to find many solutions
to the problem but cannot find any.

I just don't go to that web site anymore. I am having problems when I
purchase ringtones from AT&T. I can't play the ringtone online before I
purchase it. I have to guess at what I am buying and hope it is something I
want. Windows Media Player is my default player also. I really don't know
what to do about these web sites that it doesn't work on. I contacted
Shirley Oremland and told her the problem with her web site as someone
suggested; but they never did fix anything. It still does not work, so I
said just forget it and don't even try to play her videos. If you find out
anything, please respond back.

Can you play
http://www.fishermansnet.com/ShirleyOremland/Videos/JourneyOfLove.wmv
directly in WMP?

You jumped into somebody else's thread, near as I can tell, so I don't have
any good context for what you're talking about. =\

Basically all that tha10 has described is the same thing I'm experiencing. I
can play the video with wmv at the end and it opens up the windows media
player. But I have not found one website in which the embedded player works
ever since I bought this computer.

That is right. All I was doing was responding back. I started this
discussion back in October. I have the same problem that "jgq" has. Right
now it is with AT&T. I can't get my windows media player to play the
ringtones before I purchase them. Also I am still having problems getting it
to play on certain web sites like we have already discussed.

What version of WMP does this page:
* http://zachd.com/pss/detectwmp71.htm
say you have?

The fishermansnet page is broken, and so is a bad example. Do you have
another site you're having problems with? That would make me happier, since
the fishermansnet page is still using the wrong MIME type for the WMV file.
