I am currently running Windows Media 9 in Windows XP.
Recently, when I go to sites like CDUniverse (using
Internet Explorer) to listen to an audio clip a window
will open entitled "File Download". It asks Do you want
to save this file? and gives file information indicating
that it is an asx Windows Media Audio/Video playlist. The
file is from mfile.akanai.com. It also says "The file you
are downloading cannot be opened by the default program.
It is either corrupted or it has an incorrect file type.

No error message appears in the window. In addition, I
recently downloaded the Windows XP Service Pack 2, and AOL
9.0. I am not sure if either of these affected playing
audio clips. When I try to go to CDUniverse in AOL,
however, Windows Media opens fine.

Any suggestions?

Are you using a download manager?
If you go to WMP's Tools:Options:File Types, is the group for ASF checked
there?
