Is there a URL to a file that you're having trouble with? Is it only that
particular file?

Does it work if you save it to your hard drive first?
What's the file extension?

That page tells you that you should provide some basic and critical
information in order for anyone to be able to try and help. Maybe the
version of WMP you have, the site the MP3's came from, etc.

You can call Microsoft Support and pay for them to ask the same question we
do around here. Your choice.

Do you really think anyone can just know what version of WMP you have on
your system? You didn't even provide an OS! That narrows it down to WMP 6,
6.4, 7, 7.1, 8, 9. Then you need an exact build to go with that.
E-mail/Phone support is $35.00 Per Incident. The tech will ask you the same
thing, while putting you on hold for a few hours. Again, your choice!
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=sz;EN-US;top

No offense but you will never get any help unless you are willing to help
the people want what to help.

Chris you are given lame answers to a problem/ error that is on many topics. You always ask for more info while everybody has a different OS while the error still is the same.

I never had problems with playing mp3's but after reinstalling Windows I might have lost some kind of codec or whatever cuz now this error 80070057 still pops up with certain fresh downloaded mp3's........

And yet you still haven't provided any information, unbelievable! If you
take a minute to look around you will see that an error code doesn't relate
to a single fix. And then people like you don't apply this you don't get
good answers. You and 90% of the people who get this error think there is a
single fix, there isn't. There have been a few lamers who think they have
proved me wrong on this issue, but they haven't a clue what they are talking
about. Everytime someone's posts saying I'm stupid another person posts
saying the "fix" given by the other person didn't work for them.

If you want real help provide a bit of useful information. You dint say
where you got these Mp3's, you didn't say if others work, you didn't say if
WMP 6.4 plays them, you didn't say what version of WMP, you didn't say what
version of DirectX, you didn't say what version of Windows. Do you think
all OS's are based around the same technology? Do you think they all use
the same method for playback? Tip #1: Don't comment on things you about
PC's when you dont know about what makes it work! :)

Would you like replies that just take a shot in the dark to fix it? Just
like if someone has an issue with an AVI the answer given by over other
person is "install the divx codec". Ok, that would work assuming the video
was encoded with DivX, but what if it was Xvid? MPEG-4? DivX 3.x?

There are a few knows issues with this error. (1) Bad install of a codec
(2) Bad install of DirectX (3) A whole lot more that haven't been presented.
As posted by others (And Me) several times, you might want to install the
WME. Above all, think before you speak.

Ok, i'll bite. I've been having the same problem as these good people, and I'm sick of seeing them belittled by somebody who pretends to know what they're talking about but hasn't given the slightest hint as to what "error code 80070057" indicates.

I'll give you the specifics:

these "files". If it happens on different PC, that would be a guess that

me so! If you don't know, then you should also say so! And, of all things,
if upgrading to media player 9 fixes the problem, tell me to do so, instead
of asking me why I haven't!

I think I just said, "The parameter is incorrect", right? It doesn't have a
clear cut single solution, you asked what it indicates and I told you. Are
you looking for something else?

Without you providing more information about the files you have all of the
information that can be given. As noted in my other post "It doesn't have a
clear cut single solution". As of yet I have not seen you provide the any
real information. You just keep asking the same thing.
(http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html#isolate) If you could provide a
pointer to the files, that's a lot of help. If you could provide specific's
about what applications can/can not play the files, that's help. If you
could make sure you system is completely updated, that's help. I know you
said you have issues with Windows Update, so what updates do you correctly
have installed? No specific's on your part, equals nothing anyone here
might be able to suggest. :\

is what windows media player TELLS me whenever I get a 80070057 error. If I
needed to know THAT, I would be in the market for a new pair of contact
lenses, not a windows media player support forum. Any idiot with a search
engine and something to prove could figure out that much.

is this error referring to? Is it an internal function parameter that can't
be affected by any external conditions? Does it refer to any specific
modules? Or does it refer to a nonspecific GUID referred to by the codec
itself? If it were the last one, I could understand your needing to
reference more detailed information, but other than that, what type of event
triggers this error? This is what i've been trying to figure out.

You'd want to mention what the heck you were doing when you GOT this error.
=)
That provides super-important context about the error.
I'm assuming you're burning CDs because that's one of the chief sources I'm
aware of of 0x80070057 -
http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html#xpcdburn
should help you out if that's why you're getting the error - but for most
error codes it's critical to provide a useful context with which to help
understand the error.

Why you think it's related to DirectX is beyond me. I didn't ask for it, I
asked for what you are doing when you get the error and such. But, sorry
you don't understand the questions and how anyone would troubleshoot an
error. A DX output report tells me nothing about what you are trying do,
where you get whatever you are trying to play, etc.

I understand you have the knowledge above most who post here, but the rules
don't changes because of that. Could a brake technician know what caused a
brake issue with your car without seeing the underbody of the car? The
answer is no. And since I can't see or even know what you were trying to
play you see what you get.

Again, I'm very sorry you don't understand.

asking what caused the problem in the first place. Hell, I'm not even
asking that. I'm asking what sort of circumstances might lead to this error
being generated.

I think phlack had the best solution. It doesn't really matter what the code means. If you just convert the file to another format (wma, wav, etc.) the file will play perfectly.

hello,

i'm new to this too but i keep on getting this same problem with regards to
this error message.

it only occurs with some of the mp3's i've downloaded from WinMX. I'm
running XP with WMP 8.00.00.4487.

my computers are networked and funnily enough, when i access the same mp3's
which don't work on this computer on the laptop which is running on 2000, the
mp3 plays.

what exactly is 80070057 and is there any solution at all to this problem?
answers from anybody would be much appreciated.

Error message ID number (for example, "C00D11CD")
Error message text (for example, "Windows Media Player has encountered an
unknown error.")
Windows Media Player version
Windows operating system version
What task you were trying to accomplish prior to encountering the error
message
If the error only occurs when you use a particular file, Web link, or URL,
provide details about that item

Just FYI ... in case anyone happens to be search for this in the future.

80070057 is a generic "incorrect parameter" error, the precise meaning of
which depends heavily on the context in which the error occured. As a rule
of thumb, however, you can translate this error as:

"Oops, you requested an operation on a media file, but either did not supply
all the information required to perform this operation, or supplied incorrect
information. Media Player cannot continue."

One recent example that I encountered was with Windows Media Encoder.
Another worker at our office supplied a video file that was to be converted
into the Windows Media Video format. The profile selected expected the
source video to contain 1 video and 1 audio track, but the source video
contained only a video track. As a result, WM Encoder did not have all the
information it needed to perform the conversion, and responded with
"Incorrect parameter".

In this case, "Incorrect parameter" meant "conversion profile selected
requires audio track not found in source media file".

Phlack's conversion to a different format "resolved" his error simply
because the conversion likely changed both the media file and the required
parameters so that they matched up. Phlack, unfortunately, did not post the
information needed to intelligently diagnose his specific problem. The only
relevant information he posted was:

Name: 02-goodie_mob_ft._sleepy_brown_and_kurupt-play_your_flute-c4.mp3
Size: 4.65 MB (4,878,208 bytes)
Length: 3:23
Bitrate: 192 kB/s
Frequency: 44100 Hz
Channels: 2
Channel mode: Stereo
Encoded by: Lame 3.93

and this was insufficient.
