No Audio when converting MPEG-2 or AVCHD files

When I try to encode either an MPEG-2 (.mpg) or AVCHD (.mts) file, the video
comes out fine, but there is no sound. The files play fine in Windows Media
Player.

It seems like WME is using the right decoder for the video, but not for the
audio. How can I tell which codecs WME is using?

I also tried various system sound/recording settings (Vista), but it seems
like the audio should be going directly from file to file, not through my
systems sound card.

How do I troubleshoot this?

MCoreD has a useful page about this issue :
http://www.wmwiki.com/mcored/knowledgebase/kb-wme9errors.htm

As often for DVD decoding, a missing or marginally compatible AC3
audio decoder would normally be the cause (PCM audio should never
normall cause an issue)

Try loading a different AC3 decoder, such as provided by AC3Filter :
http://ac3filter.net/projects/ac3filter to see if WME uses that
preferentially.
