It asks too check event viewer but its not helping me much. This is the
system event error it produces.
The Windows Media Connect Service service depends on the Universal Plug and
Play Device Host service which failed to start because of the following
error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it
has no enabled devices associated with it.

By the way, I dont work for MS. I just support the OS at work.
OK heres what I did:
After installing all the software at
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/pcsetup/XPSP2.htm it will say that it didn't work,
just wait it takes a long time. Cancel out of the install.
Hit Start
Then run
Then type "services.msc" without the quotes, hit enter.
Find the following services and turn them all on...
HTTP SSL
Universal Plug and Play Device Host
SSDP Discovery Service
Then start the Windows Media Connect Service.
Boom, everything just starts working.
To start the services, right click on the name then hit properties.
From the "Startup type" dropdown list choose automatic then hit the start
button.
Hope it works for you!
Thanks again!!!

In that same list... did you start the "windows media connect service"?
It worked for me with out disabling my firewall.

I just found this thread, tried all the suggestions, and even after a
re-install as you suggested, I still can't get the xb360 or the PC to
see each other.
->.net is installed
-> Xbox live works fine!
Static IPs-- 192.168.1.2 for computer, 192.168.1.7 for xbox360
The 360 connects to my network via a wi-fi bridge at 192.168.1.10, this
is what I used for my xbox1. again, note that xbox live runs just fine.
I have a Windows 2003 Server running and can access it just fine. (Too
bad WMC can't run on that...)
Not new at this, I develop window software and have been running a home
network for over 5 years, linux, laptops, PDAs, the works.
HTTP SSL service running-set to automatic
UPNP service running set to automatic
WMC service running, set to automatic
Few things that I noted:
Ping to my xbox doesn't work. But that could mean the 360 doesn't
respond to pings.
What are peoples services (SSL, SDDP etc) set to 'log on' as? Mine are
"networkservice/NT AUTHORITY", should they be set to that?
In your experiences to get it working, did either the PC or xbox360 need
restarting?
What should the 360 be 'doing'? Sitting on any dashboard 'blade' or a
particular spot in a menu?
I'm almost ready to start watching packets with a packetsniffer and see
what's going on, but that's a bit extreme! Everything else works so
smooth on the 360, I'm just suprised this is such a pain in the butt to
get working!
(my email is bogus, please reply to newsgroup)
My HTTP SSL is set to manual, I don't know if this makes a difference or not.
Have you clicked on reset to restore the windows firewall settings in
Windows media connect?
Yes, i've done everything every previous poster has done without any of
it working.

firewall is OFF. So, no I haven't reset it. I've made sure the firewall
is off since I don't need it for my network.
I put a packet sniffer on the xp machine, and it's trying to send
packets to 253.255.255.203 or some strange IP address that doesn't
exist. I never see any packets from the xbox at all.
The SSDP seems to be doing this. Inside the packets, they are standard
HTTP requests, and uPNP, which seems to make sense. (WMC Is uPNP based).
But why they are going 'nowhere' is really strange. That's not a
broadcast IP either.
if only WMC had *more* options, so I could force it to see the xbox, or
tell it where it should send packets to.
Here's what I did. I installed, then uninstalled Windows media connect 2.0,
then reinstalled it, I turned off my firewall & antispyware & antivirus, and
then made sure all the services are started and running: That is, I ran
"services.msc" looked for the following services and turn them all
on...(started)
HTTP SSL
Universal Plug and Play Device Host
SSDP Discovery Service
Windows Media Connect Service
Any help would be appreciated!

1. make sure you don’t have more than 1 firewall enabled including the Msoft
one
2. make sure you don’t have a firewall on your router – if so then you may
have to reset it with a paper clip to make sure there isn’t some weird
setting
3. try setting your pc to the DMZ computer or try setting your XBOX to DMZ.
You can find your XBOX ipaddress through dashboard or on your router status
page
4. try a different host pc – I had to reinstall the pc software 3 times
before everything worked. Start with 360 first then when it says to download
the pc software do it again even if you have it already.
5. Make sure there isn’t a windows permissions dialog waiting for approval
of the new program. Close all other windows programs so you can see all
dialogs
6. eliminate the router by using a crossover cable to the pc – just to see.
7. check msconfig to make sure you haven’t disabled a dependency service.
You may have the required services set to start up automatically but they
aren’t starting due to a dependant service. Use control panel /admin
/services to see which services are running. Use google to see dependences.
8. make sure you can share folders between host computer and another one.
This will telll you if you have windows file sharing working. Make sure you
can get files from host and vice versa
Xbox 360 Media Center Extender does not work with Media Center PC's
that have multiple IP's... whether they have multiple networks cards,
or a single network card with multiple IP addresses. I got it to work
with almost blind luck that I stumbled upon the source of the
problem... but it amazes me that I couldn't find any information on
this... considering multiple IP's is an option with any XP or Media
Center PC... and not a third-party feature.... Microsoft should make
sure they mention it, or at least in some troubleshooting pages.
This is only related to the 360 extender, as I was using the old...
media center extender for xbox (v1) $99 kit without a problem, on the
same computer while it had multiple IP's enabled and the same
software configuration.
I haven't called them myself, but from what I understand people
call.... wait for hours on the phone, without any ideas or clues as to
what's causing the problem... strange.
(also be aware if you are a web developer and/or if you have any local
web servers, they MIGHT cause problems by interfering with the HTTP SSL
windows service) I personally have Apache (using the WAMP bundle)
without a problem, working with the old extender and the new 360
extender now) - if you don't know what I'm talking about...
ignore this... just disable the multiple IP's.
