After installing a new adapter (Hercules 3D Phrophet 11 MX) I cannot use the
Advanced button on Control Panel. It comes up with the message "An error
occured while Windows was working with the Control Panel file
C:\windows\system\desk.cpl." How can I cure this?
Mark.

Thank you for the very prompt reply. I have read and tried to apply the
instructions you directed me to, but without success. This may be
because
the instructions seem incomplete or confused. Thus:

(1) Paragraph 7 tells one to click standard display adapter and then
click
OK. There is no OK on my screen. Instead there is "have Disk"
and "Next".
Which one should I press?

(2) If I press either I get a warning message that the driver is not
written
specifically for the adapter card and do I want to continue? Should this
appear and if so is it right to continue?

(3) In Paragraphs 8 and 9 of the instructions I am told to click "next"
etc
and then "fininish". Does this mean that I ignore the "apply" button?

(4) The instructions tell me how to edit the Registry and then tell me
to
restart the computer. When I do I get a message that the computer has
found
new hardware and an invitation to use the install wizard. Do I accept
or
decline this invitation?

(5) Is Deskw95 a protected file in WindowsME so that I should use Safe
Mode
to extract it?

(5) The instructions tell me to extract Deskw95 and rename it Desk.cpl.
If I
do this I end up with a file called Desk.cpl.cpl. Surely I should
rename it
simply Desk?

(6) If I simply rename it Desk, the computer tells me I already have a
file
of that name. Should I therefore delete the existing file before I
attempt
to rename Deskw95?

I have tried various combinations of the above possibilities without
success. I am either left with the original fault or with a standard
adapter
and low resolution, so each time I have had no alternative but to
restore
the register etc and get back to my starting point.

I would be grateful for any further assistance you can provide.

Mark.

I had the same problem after I installed a Motorola modem, I reinstalled
Windows and got myself a different
modem and it worked.
