Sometimes my computer will start acting sluggishly. If I do Ctrl+Alt+Delete I notice winmgmt listed. Is this what's slowing things down? What does winmgmt do? -Carl Stephenson

I suspect that that is the case. Winmgmt.exe can be initiated by both pchschd.exe (the PCHealth entry in MSConfig | Startup and the PCHealth Data Collection entry in the Task Scheduler) and/or MSInfo32.exe or the System Information in Help & Support. Normally winmgmt should exit when it has collected its data but there have been a number of similar reports (and I have experienced the problem as well) of winmgmt.exe not exiting correctly and staying resident and gradually using more and more cpu cycles until the system grinds to a halt. In such cases I have simply killed winmgmt.exe and continued without further problem.
See MS KB Q278449 "Description of Windows Millennium Edition System Information (Msinfo32.exe) Tool" (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q278/4/49.ASP) which contains some information regarding data collected by winmgmt.exe. Quoting Microsoft "WMI is the Microsoft implementation of Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM), an industry initiative to develop a standard technology for accessing management information in an enterprise environment. The purpose of this initiative is to help companies lower their total cost of ownership by enabling powerful enterprise-class management of systems, programs, and devices." Not something really of much interest to the home user of Me unless perhaps they seek support from Microsoft. -- Mike Maltby mi...@mcmaltby.fsnet.co.uk

Hello: I have the same experience and have followed your advice. This is off topic, is there a site that provides optimal set-up information for smaller group users? Such as sgl. user, home based, noncommercial. That may show and explain the different "tweaks" that one can apply for start-up and smooth system operation and conserve space. Such as how to remove Find Fast and MDM. Thank You. Take Care. B.

Not that I know of but then again I have to admit I have not gone looking for such a site. I'm sure they exist. I frequently see references from other posters mentioning sites recommending some tweak or other. Unfortunately the recommendation is often to do something with which I do not agree or is clearly in error so I rarely follow up such links. Hopefully someone will be able to provide you with a suitable and useful link or two.
Regards and best wishes, -- Mike Maltby mi...@mcmaltby.fsnet.co.uk
