ME broadband and a router

I've had cable broadband directly connected to my ME puter for about a year
now.
No problems with the link..
However I'm now putting a router (DLink DI-604) in the picture. (To share
internet with 2 other puters)
So far I've been unable to get on the internet when using the router.
I've ran the wizard and all the stuff I can locate from the ME help files..
I'm in some deep water here guys and I'd appreciate some insight from the
old hands using these things.

Tks,
RTS

Can you connect to the internet using the other computers?
are you connecting OK to the router? (can you open the router's
configuration interface in IE?)
does the router claim to be connected? - if not, then the PC has no chance!
usually, the internet connection has to go to a specific port on the
router - the others can be swapped around - make sure that it's connected to
the right one.
Is the router compatible with your ISP (who is your ISP?)?

Try this
Reset your router to manufacturer's configuration (RTFM for that! - look
here - http://www.dlink.com/products/default.aspx?pid=DI-604&tab=3)
Make sure that the PC and Internet connections are correct, then go to IE
and try typing 192.168.0.1 into the address bar - if the page opens, then
enter ther username and password (usually admin is the username - the
password is left blank
Enter any required information in the setup fields manually

and then Save the configuration and reboot the router - you should be good
to go.
(It frequently helps to uninstall any ISP-supplied configuration software
prior to this, as it gets in the way, mostly!)

Tks, Noel,
you got the magic number (192.168.0.1) I'd been using the wrong set of
numbers.
possibly lack of other puters on the router might be some of the problem.
(I haven't added any yet, but will have 3 when all done..)
according to the little lights on the cable modem and the router their
jabbering all the time.
both wan and port 1 lights flashing off and on several times each minute.
even more so when i try to access the internet.

I'd guess the router isn't set right for this puter, my son was the last
one to use the thing and that was about 6 years ago..
basicly the same kind of hookup though. Cable with 2 puters.

Thanks again,
RTS

How well I know the feeling that poor old Rocky has. I still have not
hooked up my DLink 784 wireless router to this machine........but still
trying to sort out some puzzling things Willy did.

Would the free program "Network Magic" help Rocky out?? I don't have the
link, but do have it downloaded......someone on here recommended it.

PA Bear helped me out with removing IE8 cuz I couldn't open pictures, but I
am having bad luck with reinstalling my *.dbx files. Willy put his company
name at the top of that tree instead of my name and I am wondering if that
is why. I think I am going to have to take it over to him to fix up. I
have no Cookie or Temp. Internet File folders and that bugs me. I can
remove them via the back door but figure after what I paid that it should be
the same as before.....but then I was always rather picky, grin.

Tks all those that offered help..
Got it working (I think) least wise the internet is available now through
the router..
FYI: I wasn't holding the reset down long enough to "reset" the router.
then noticed that unless I rebooted the ME puter the changes didn't take
effect.

Once I did all that, access is now working to the internet..

Tks again Noel for pointing in the right direction...

U.S. cable modems generally look for the MAC address of the connected
equipment, and assign the IP address per the MAC address. If the account is
only for one IP address per MAC address, putting a router in place instead
of a computer changes the MAC address seen by the modem, and you won't get
an IP address from the modem. Normally, you can clear the modem table (it
is, apparently, kept in volatile memory) by removing power briefly, or using
a reset button (normally only on modems with telephony capability).

In my experience, remove power from the cable modem first. Then power down
the computer. Then disconnect the Ethernet cable between them. Then add the
router. Connect the modem to the router, and then connect the computer(s) to
the router. Power up the modem (or reset, if a telephony modem). Wait for
the panel lights to settle into normal working mode. Power up the router.
Wait for the panel lights to settle into working mode. Power up the
computers last.

If using a wireless LAN, the power up sequence does not change; even though
you won't be connecting Ethernet cables.

Just acquired a new laptop (b'day present) with Vista (awful) and PC World
promise a 'free' upgrade (20 shipping??) of W7 in October. Paperwork
procedure sounds like a potential minefield. Nobody at the store had a clue.

Didn't see any reference to it in your home address, but perhaps that number

Nice little gift you got......even if it is that nasty Vista. But 20 pounds
for shipping Windows 7? Nah......I could probably send it over there for
less than one pound. Shipping costs are such a rip-off, eh? I see that on
eBay....and do not deal with people who inflate shipping costs.

I have a Canon LiDE 25 scanner which works perfectly in XP - and is
allegedly Vista compatible (although does need Vista drivers).

Can I get it to work *properly* in Vista? - No way!! Sure, I can get it to
'function' after a fashion. Hell, it doesn't even get recognised properly or
work in Control Panel/Scanners & Cameras. (To be fair, I haven't yet tried
installing the scanner on this new laptop - but I couldn't get it to run
satisfactorily on a previous laptop under Vista. Just hope the W7 upgrade

I suppose some might find the UAC a pain, I don't find it too much of a bind
but that's me. I think it really gets on peoples nerves if they're the sort
that are forever changing or installing and un-installing things, to me it's
another layer of security making sure I did want to change or install that
program and it's not something nasty that's got in.

I know I had no problems with my all-in-one printer when I bought that and
it was an old model, that's the reason I bought it because it was cheap.

I haven't actually tried my other scanner, that's a Cannon, as I have the
function built into my printer but it's OK if John needs to scan anything I
can just plug it into the XP machine.

Must say that I am surprised at all the trouble you are having with 'Vista',
Mart. As Joan pointed out, it has a 'bad' name but, as for me, it works just
fine as did/does ME, only better. Those 'permissions' don't bother me at
all and neither do the other things people complain about, because they
aren't there for me. The 'only' problem I encounter is the 'slow' opening of
the video play and that may rather be the fault of the machine than the OS.
A lot of the success with Vista has to do with the installation and
configuration of the system. It is a memory hog and must be dealt with
accordingly.
To my understanding Windows 7 isn't going to be much different. For the time
being I stick with what I've got.
Best of luck with it,

Harry.

Not so much 'trouble' Harry, more a PITA. Having lived with XP (and ME of
