From post at TechGuy's 31July209 by ojn. Checked it is real.

Avast has added the following notice without much announcement.

See: http://www.avast.com/eng/system-requ...vast-home.html :

"Note: The operating systems Windows 95/98/Me/NT4 will be supported until
the end of 2009."

There was talk about it in the Vista group and here, I believe, a while
back, but it's good to know the real facts.
Thanks,

Harry.

So where do we go from here? Please don't say Symantec.

My guess is to regularly backup your data, keep whatever AV utility you have
running (ignoring the 'no longer supported' nag screens) and hope you don't
get zapped. If you do, try to fight it with whatever AV you've got to hand
or (worst case) clean install. Not many other options open. Just wonder how
long the WinMe WU's will remain available? (REM: haven't checked for a
couple of months)

Hello Corday:

Mart's reply makes sense, but there is more than one way 'to skin a cat', as
they say.
Personally I cross the bridge when I get there and install another 'free' AV
version. Don't ask me which one, I'd have to look it up first. When the time
comes, we'll talk about it again, I hope.
Until then: happy surfing.

Harry.

running fine :)

Hi Noel, good to see that it still being supported - even if "supported"
isn't quite the right word. Very rarely use my WinMe laptop now. Battery is
totally knackered and I've no intention of throwing (even more) money at it.
My new Vista laptop has taken over my resources these days <g>

BTW - was this 'early' installation (05:56 BST) just in case MS may pull the
updates?

Nah - I actually did the install/update a couple of days ago, but
insomnia/dyspepsia reminded me about your comment this morning.
My Vista/W7 lappy is taking everything I can throw at it as well - although
it'll have to go back to PCWorld for them to fix the BD drive, which won't
play Blu-Rays any more (in any of the four OS's installed!)... I'll be lost
without it for the few days it'll take them to sort it out. (I think the
blue laser is gone, as everything else works OK)

Hello Noel,
does Joan know something we don't know? <g>
It seems strange, actually, to read about someone 'installing' ME.
My entire ME setup (desktop) just sits there, in case of an emergency with
the separate 'Vista' system. But it's in perfect working order and I try to
keep it that way with periodic check-ups.
Always good to 'hear' from you, Noel.

Harry.
