This post did not attract an replies last night so, I thought I would try
again.

I cannot start IE6/SP-1 without getting subject error message and
immediately closing.

I have reloaded IE6 (over top) and the problem persists. I've also done a
full virus scan with up-to-date definitions (Norton) and an AdAware6
scan/fix. Nothing seems to help. Also ran "repair."

It appears to work ok.

This can sometimes happen if you neglect to switch OFF all anti-virus
protection during the install.
Try this.
Reboot to Safe Mode, and open Add/Remove Programs
Look for the Microsoft Internet Explorer.... line, highlight it, and click
on Remove.
Select the Repair Option from the popup, and click OK. - Windows will reboot
to normal mode, and hopefully cure your problem.
