You have the latest Cumulative Security Update for IE installed (889293).
It was released in Dec-04. Yes, usually OE updates are displayed in IE
Help>About>Update Versions.

I wouldn't bother. You have some tearing down and rebuilding to do. See

No and kinda/sorta. 889293 is a cumulative update for IE, therefore it
either includes the fixes in earlier IE updates or it has updated files
which supersede the earlier ones.
The above notwithstanding, in your original post you stated that you'd just
reinstalled WinME. Why? We all wish you hadn't done that.
After having upgraded to IE6 SP1 in WinME (which I am assuming you had
done), IE6 /must/ be uninstalled before reinstalling WinME or you end up
with what the WinME gang affectionately calls "version soup"

WMP9 didn't work right and I had a few other problems. Those are all fixed
now. I had to reinstall rather than reformat. There are some things I might
not be able to fix with a format: third-party software activation, Windows
might not see my CD drives, I do not have all the drivers, etc. It took
forever to get Windows to recognize the CD drives and to get ASPI set up
properly for Nero/PowerDVD on this board. All that works fine now.
My mainboard failed recently, and I had to use a different one that isn't as
good. I put my hard drive with WinMe already installed into this other board.
There was no choice. Not all my hardware was compatible, so I had to swap
additional components. That's why third-party software activation might be a
problem. I don't have drivers for this board or the ISA sound card. If
Windows doesn't autodetect them and find drivers on its own, them I'm SOL.
HOW DID I REINSTALL WINDOWS ME OVER ITSELF?
To reinstall WinMe (which has IE5.5 and WMP7.1) overtop IE6SP1 and WMP9, I
followed advice that someone in a different Microsoft WinMe newsgroup gave.
After backing up important files and disabling stuff in msconfig, I booted to
DOS with a WinMe with startup disk and renamed folders.
Internet Explorer folder:
REN C:\Progra~1\Intern~1 OLDINT
Windows Media Player folder:
REN C:\Progra~1\Window~1 OLDWMP
It was also suggested to rename WMPLOC.dll, but I couldn't find that file.
I also did a few extra things on my own that I wish I hadn't. Following the
same procedure, I renamed the Outlook Express folder (big mistake) and
deleted the Windows Updates folder.
Windows reinstalled from DOS with a SUWIN error at 60-65%. The SUWIN error
did not have a number or error code. I had to click IGNORE about 50 times
before Windows would continue installing. The error is probably due to OE and
WMP.
WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THE REINSTALL?
Once WinME was back up, I had no files at all in the Outlook Express folder
and no working WMP 7.1. When I tried to open WMP 7.1 I got an error, and it
wouldn't work at all. I tried the full install of WMP 7.1 to resolve it, but
that would not install. I tried the full install of WMP 9 and it installed
fine.
Next I installed IE5.5SP2 full install. Still nothing in OE. Then tried IE 6
SP1 full install from my CD backup. That didn't bring back OE6 either. Tried
repairing IE6. No dice. Luckily, I had zipped up all the files in my OE 5.5
folder way back when. I unzipped those files into the Outlook Express folder
and then had a working Outlook Express 5.5. My address book came back and I
could sign on and get email. I reinstalled IE6SP1. OE worked, but it was
still 5.5. Tried repairing IE6 again. Then I manually added OE6 as an
additional component and eventually got OE6 back on here.
WHAT'S THE CURRENT SITUATION WITH IE6SP1 & OE6?
Everything works fine except that the 837009 update won't install.
Reinstalled all the Windows Updates that the Windows Update said I need,
except for 837009 and 890175. There may still be some mild "version soup" in
IE/OE, but the majority of my current installation works fine. It's less of
"version soup" than some people have when reinstalling WinMe without
uninstalling IE6/WMP9, but at least it all works now, except for the 837009
update. How protected am I without that update? What other IE/OE updates do I
really have to have that I currently don't have? I wonder if there are some
registry entries that should be deleted when installing WinMe overtop IE6. It
is not always possible to uninstall IE6 first.
WHAT'S THE CURRENT SITUATION WITH WMP9?
All the WMP Windows Updates reinstalled fine. No WMP problems now, except
that some visualizations don't always work with every audio file. That's no
big deal. Visualizations work sometimes but not always. That's minor. I don't
use WMP very often. It might just be because the video card I have now is an
old one with 4MB video ram and no 3d stuff. It could also be something with
the chipset on this mainboard. Or, it could be that I'm using a 16-bit ISA
sound card instead of the onboard sound I had with the other mainboard. Not
worried about the visualization problem unless there is an easy fix for it.
My favorite visualization, Musical Colors "Neon Highway", does not always
work when playing certain files. Some other Musical Colors visualizations
don't work either. If I had a different video card that was either AGP 1.0 or
PCI, my visualization problem might not be a problem. DX9.0C is currently
installed, but the video card can't support all its features.

You're supposed to uninstall IE/OE6 before reinstalling WinMe, but you can't
uninstall OE6 if there is no OE5.5 info or corrupt OE5.5 info, as in my case.
Same with WMP9. My WMP7.1 was corrupt. Also, it's not always possible to
uninstall IE/OE6 first. I'd need an alternate workaround. I may need to just
leave it as it is, but I'll leave that decision up to the experts reading
this.
Thank goodness for these groups. I tried a few things that didn't work but
also a few things that did work. So please don't criticize about how stupid I
am. We learn by mistakes.
WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE...

best advice about your problem(s) in the WinME NG rather than the OE6 NG
(though we're learning).

If you're not going to remove IE and reinstall per Noel's page, go ahead and
install 890175.
You might try installing 837009 manually via

Given the apparent, dirty install of IE6, I kinda doubt it'll "stick".

Had you upgraded to IE6 SP1 before you reinstalled WinME? Your posts
haven't been clear (to me) on that.
In any event, you'd simply follow Noel's instructions and remove IE itself
(no matter what version) using IEradicator.

I have tried installing 837009 manually. It says "This update requires
Outlook Express 6 SP1 to be installed." I have not tried to install 890175.
If I go ahead and follow the steps on Noel's page to remove and reinstall
IE/OE, I will require some assistance because at some point I will run into
problems. Since my Internet access on this machine may go down in the
process, I may be forced to access this newsgroup from a Pentium I 133Mhz,
32MB RAM laptop with a 33k dial-up modem.
It would be best in that case to view the newsgroups offline in Outlook
Express rather than the web-based community here on the Microsoft site. I may
need to use a different email address in order to use the newsgroups offline.
The email address I'm using here can only receive mail. It can't send it. (It
is a "spamguard" address.) This post was sent from the web. I'm going to post
separately from OE as a "test" to see if I set everything up correctly in
Outlook Express.

Yes, several times. I prefer reinstalling rather than reformatting. The last
time I reformatted was Sept or Oct 2004. I had to call Symantec to get
permission to reactivate NSW2004. (It is a retail version.) If I reformat
every few months, they're going to think I'm trying to use the product on
more than one computer at a time. That's not the case. My old mainboard died,
so I had no choice but to transfer everything to this machine which is a mix
of old/new parts. Eventually, I hope to upgrade to a P4 system, but money is
the problem. I cannot afford the needed hardware for XP compatibility, and I
cannot afford XP itself. XpPro is $300 for the full retail version. I don't
want an upgrade or another OEM copy of Windows. I'm stuck with OEM now. In
fact, all my previous versions of Windows are OEM. (The computers they came
on have since died or been dismantled for parts.)
Because my Windows CD is OEM, I have absolutely no support from Microsoft.
These newsgroups are my only option. (You're not supposed to install OEM
software on a different computer, and I didn't realize that when I bought my
current WinMe OEM CD from eBay.) This CD is "genuine Windows software." It is
not an illegal or pirated copy. It has only been installed on one machine at
a time, and it's all I've got. I really don't want to reinstall Win98SE. It
is also an OEM CD. The computer it came on is gone, and I like WinMe better.
If I have to reformat the hard drive again, I'm not going to do a fresh
install of WinMe unless it is from the FULL RETAIL version, which can be
transferred legally to a different computer once uninstalled from the old
one. I'm going to try to find such a copy that is new and sealed and has
never been used. Maybe I can get one for around $30 on eBay. I try to buy
things used whenever possible, but in some cases that doesn't work out well.
The newer things generally cost too much. I will probably need help setting
up the CD drives again and may have other questions. If that happens, I'll
try to find the best newsgroup to ask each question.
If I cannot reactivate NSW2004, then I'm going to go back to NSW2003 (which
doesn't require activation) and use all its features EXCEPT Norton Antivirus.
Then I can use antivirus software from a different company (such as eTrust
EZAntiVirus by Computer Associates) with no conflicts.
[You try living on $600/month and see what computer stuff YOU can afford.
Housing, utilities, food, and vehicle take most of what I have. If I didn't
live with someone else, I couldn't afford a place to live at all. A place of
my own is beyond my means. It's a miracle I even have a van or a computer. I
barely can afford to maintain internet access, so there's not a lot of money
left to buy hardware/software. The vehicle is a necessity because I'm
physically challenged. The computer is a luxury, but it's the only fun thing
in my life. Without it I have nothing to do all day. I'm also mentally
challenged, so I often need to ask for help. Thank goodness for these

As I've tried to point out, WinME is rather persnickety when it comes to
reinstalling after having upgraded to IE6. Noel and other WinME users
learned this the hard way. I advise you to benefit from their experience
and follow all steps in http://winnoel.users.btopenworld.com/ReInIE.htm now.
If you don't, I don't think you'll ever be able to install 837009.

Even if you had a retail version, there is very limited support for any
Win9x (Win98, Win98SE, WinME) OS now.

It will take me a few days to review all the details on your site and to
save the instructions in modified text (.txt) files with all the hyperlink
web addresses. Then I'll always have access to the info should my WinMe
browser on this PC be lost during the fixing process.
Without Internet Explorer, I won't be able to open the (.htm) or (.mht)
files saved on my hard disk. Without Outlook Express, I won't be able to

and "PC Health and System Restore." I also want to have all the tools
downloaded in advance and know how to use them. I'll let you know of any
invalid links I find on your pages. I have found some already. What forum
would you like them posted in, or would you like me to email them to you

Since your fixes pertain to many more situations than the issues in this
thread, I'm wondering if more users will benefit if I create a separate
thread (or threads) for those questions. That's a few days away, though.
Right now one specific question that comes to mind is what's the difference
between IEradicator and IE6remov, and in what situation(s) do I use each
tool?

spelling error on that page in question 3. Atl+D is probably supposed to be

If I have done something wrong in posting, please tell me specifically what
so that I will not do it again and can be a better member of this online
community. In the meantime, here is what I have learned so far.
MAKING GOOD NEWSGROUP POSTS
1. Do some research first. (I always do. Sometimes I either find nothing or
too many results or results that really don't pertain to my situation. A new
post is usally best under those circumstances.)
2. Decide where to post. (Deciding which group is best for my post is often
a problem, but I'm learning. For general non-technical questions, I can use
newsgroups specific to Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Windows Media
Player, etc. For technical or troubleshooting questions, a Windows Me
specific group seems to be best. I still have not found a good DirectX
newsgroup for end users on the Microsoft Community site.)
3. How to compose your post. (Understood. I think I've done everything right
that's mentioned here. I always try to choose a good subject line, summarize
the problem, include error messages, provide sufficient details, describe my
system, explain what has been done so far, and do the other things
mentioned. I always proofread also, but I will not have a spell checker
until Office 2000 is reinstalled. I don't want to install it until I have
properly slipstreamed it and until my current IE problems are fixed. One
drawback to newsgroups is that you can't go back later to edit your posts as
you can on certain online forums.)
4. After you post. (Understood. I don't think I've done anything wrong
here.)
5. Once your problems are solved. (Understood.)
6. Survival camp, posting errors to avoid. (Understood. I don't think I've
done anything wrong here either, except forgetting to include some of the
previous post in my replies. I've learned that the nonessential parts of the
previous post should be deleted. It's hard to tell which parts I can cut out
and which to include. I generally do not crosspost and usually do not use
ALL CAPITALS except intermittently for emphasis and headings, to separate
parts of the message for easier reading.)

The IE6Remov.zip is a little utility for fooling the OS into thinking that
IE6 is no longer present, so that a reinstall of ME works properly, it's not
a tool I've ever personally used (I really must find time to do it, since
the author has since died)
IERadicator is a well-known tool for ripping out the whole of all versions
of IE on Win9x systems - make sure that you follow the instructions to the
letter, or you're likely to end up ripping out too much! This resolves all
known 'version soup' problems in ME, and enables you to then install
whatever version of IE you prefer - I would recommend that you install
IE6SP1.

What do I do if I cannot uninstall IE6 first, as in the case when I got the

only option.

The IEradicator README states that:

Does this mean that I'll lose the html preview features in Windows Explorer
after I run IEradicator? That I won't be able to see my custom html folder
messages or preview pictures and files? That all the icons on the right side
of the screen will be flush against the margin rather than off to the right
as is normally? When Explorer gets corrupted like that, generally the only
way to fix it is to do a system restore or reinstall Windows. I won't be
able to do a system restore, because system restore will be messed up by
IEradicator and all the restore points will be no good.
The README also states that IEradicator deletes the following folders and

taskbar. Since Java is listed, does that mean it completely removes the Java

The VM3810 is only an update, isn't it? Doesn't it require a previous
version of VM (like the one that came in WinMe) to be on there first?
I think I'll also have to reinstall Macromedia Shockwave and Flash since
Downloaded Program Files will be wiped out, as well as the ActiveX controls
for Housecall, Panda Active Scan, BitDefender Online Scan, and my other
online security sites. I'd definitely better back up my Favorites, because
IEradicator will wipe all of them out, and I've got at least 5000 sites in

Since C:\Program Files\Common Files is shown, does that mean I'd also better
back up my Outlook Express stationery? Many of those are custom. Since I'm
not a programmer and not very knowledgeable about code, it took me a lot of
trial and error to find the right HTML syntax to customize a lot of those

Will IEradicator search my hard drive and wipe out all the (.htm) and (.mht)
files I have saved there? I hope not. I've saved several web pages from
Microsoft and other hardware and software sites. I don't mean where you
view web pages offline in C:\Windows\Offline Web Pages. (Those will probably
be wiped out.) I mean where you are on a web page and select File - Save As
and then choose a location to save the page and then choose Files Of Type
(web page complete .htm/.html, web page archive .mht, or html only
.htm/.html).
Before I attempt to run IEradicator, certain programs that depend on IE (and
others that don't) may need to be uninstalled first. Your web site mentions
a few. I have not had time to write the post regarding my Belarc Advisor
results, but I need to do that soon because I think it's important to the
issues at hand. I have questions about the status of some of the hotfixes
shown and wonder if some of them need to be uninstalled before I do anything
with IEradicator. I'll try to get back to you later today about that.

I have no OE5 data (or corrupt OE5 data), so OE6 may or may not uninstall
from Control Panel. If it does, there may be no files in my Outlook Express
folder or no Outlook Express folder. If it does not, how do I get OE out of
there? IEradicator documentation leads me to believe that it only removes
IE, not OE.
When I reinstall IE, I'm afraid IE may not put those OE files back in or it
may not install them completely, as was the case this time. How else do I
get OE back in there?
My Outlook Express mail store folders are no longer saved in
C:\Windows\Application Data\Identities. I have them saved in a folder in My
Documents. I have two separate identities, one for mail (Main Identity) and
one for newsgroups. Will they be wiped out at that location, or should I
back them up to a second place, just to be safe, before trying to remove IE
or OE? How would you suggest backing up my Windows Address Book? Without OE,
it will be corrupted and all the contacts will be gone.

file "C:\Windows\System\wmploc.dll". This prevents the "VERX" error, which
will cause the re-install to fail."
That may be the reason I got the SUWIN error at 60-65% during the last
Windows reinstall. I could not find wmploc.dll to delete it.
I had to click IGNORE 50 times for Windows Setup to continue. The result was
that I had no working WMP 7.1. After WMP 9 was reinstalled, all the Windows
Updates for WMP installed fine. Belarc Advisor states that everything WMP
related has a green check mark, which means they are properly installed and
verified. I'm surprised, considering all the trouble I had with WMP.
At least I don't have any red X's with Belarc in any of the categories, but
I do have some blanks under Net Framework, IE, and OE, which means there's
not enough information to verify those hotfixes. I had difficulty getting
either version of Net Framework to install to begin with, and had to consult
the Microsoft Knowledge Base to get them installed. But let's save that for
my next post.

purpose for which we're using it here, it's the best tool around.
Please read what's on the website - most people who've used it have found
that it works fine, and their system is back up and running in under an hour
after starting the process. Those who've had problems didn't follow the
instruction properly, as we discovered in troubleshooting the problems
later.
Yes you need to back up ALL your data - there's always a possibility that
something could go drastically wrong (but you should be doing that as a
matter of routine anyway?), most especially your Favourites and any critical
cookies you have.
WRT Outlook Express - In my experience, using this process doesn't affect
OE, since it's not uninstalled by IERadicator, but again - back up first.
HTM and MHT files should not be affected, unless they are in the deleted
folders.
WRT other OS's - each has their own foibles, and ME appears to be unique in
having the problem that reinstalling the OS fails to properly restore the IE
function - perhaps there was something missed in the Beta-testing of IE6,
and MS decided that it wasn't viable to fix it.
If you couldn't find the WMPLOC.DLL file earlier, perhaps it was because you
were unable to see hidden or system files - it should be in the
C:\Windows\System folder

best way to uninstall Outlook Express? Since IEradicator will remove
Internet Explorer *completely*, should I also *completely* remove Outlook
Express? Since it is "version soup," I assume the *complete* uninstall would

Is there any way to back up the long list of sites in the Trusted and
Restricted Zones in Internet Explorer? The sites are listed in Internet
Options in Control Panel and in the Windows Registry. While the list of
Trusted sites is relatively short, there are *thousands* of sites in my
Restricted Zone. At least three programs add entries to the Restricted Zone
for Internet Explorer. All three programs are easy to uninstall and

Noel, I am very happy to know that many others who followed your
instructions were able to get IE/OE back up and running within an hour, but
every situation is unique. IEradicator is a VERY powerful program that can
do a LOT of damage, and it is best to get all concerns addressed before
using it. This is the first time I've done this, and I want to get it right
the first time. It'll be worth it once everything is fixed, no matter how
long that takes. Education and precautions now may reduce the

After re-reading the instructions on your site thoroughly, there are still
questions. There are many programs and Windows components that will be
affected by the removal of IE which are not mentioned on your web site. I
must determine which affected programs and updates can remain installed, and
merely have certain settings changed or disabled, versus which programs and
updates must be completely uninstalled before running IEradicator. If
possible, I want to reduce the number of programs that must be completely
uninstalled and reinstalled (more about that in separate posts).
Tearing down and rebuilding IE/OE, and all programs and Windows components
affected by this, is major Windows surgery. Preparation is key. This --
where we are now -- is the "preparation stage," backing things up and
"preparing" the computer to run IEradicator while minimizing data loss,
conflicts, and potential complications. There is a lot of work involved
before and after. I do not mind the work so long as everything will be
fixed.
Many settings cannot easily be backed up with a particular file or registry
key, so I must manually go into several areas and write them all down in a
text file. I've done a lot of customizing. Once the settings are written
down, then it's easier to recustomize them after IE, OE and the other
programs are reinstalled. Determining which Windows Updates will need to be
reinstalled must also be done. Belarc will need to be run again at some
point after IE/OE are reinstalled.
While waiting for responses to some questions, I will ask other questions in
separate posts. Responses can be nested to the appropriate message, kind of
like threads within threads, rather than just added to the very last post in
the thread and going even farther to the right. I'll be able to find
things easier that way.
In the mean time, I'm also downloading all the updates that will
probably need to be reinstalled (while I still have a browser!).
Plus, I have a life other than the computer. I'm going to watch some movies
while I'm waiting!

From the above Belarc info, NF 1.0/1.1 may "lack the data to allow

Maybe there isn't supposed to be a mark beside them, just beside their
hotfixes. What do you think? Should I completely uninstall NF1.0 and 1.1 and
reinstall them after IE is fixed, or should I leave them alone? There are
entries for .NET Framework in Internet Options, so I don't know how .NET
Framework will be affected by the removal of IE. The reason both .NET
Framework versions are installed is because some of my programs require 1.0

Please explain why you think ALL Norton programs must be uninstalled, rather
than just disabling their options and their startup entries in MSCONFIG,
before running IEradicator. I assume you have some troubleshooting
experience with Norton, so tell me what specific problems you anticipate.
There may be workarounds.
Uninstalling and reinstalling WinFax is simple, but I'd rather not uninstall
SystemWorks due to possible problems activating it again after reinstall and
the complexities of uninstalling, reinstalling, and reconfiguring it. If the
problems Norton has with IEradicator are just related to virus definition
corruption and email protection, that's an easy fix. The removal of the BHO
in Internet Explorer may also be repairable. Most of Norton's protections
can be disabled by options within the suite, and its MSCONFIG entries can be
unchecked temporarily.

had have been with IE, OE, Windows, or other programs. If uninstalling
Norton first is the ONLY way (if it will get screwed up royally regardless
of any precautions taken), then I will (deep sigh) have to uninstall it, as
I have uninstalled Microsoft Office.
After IE is fixed and Norton is reinstalled, activation will be the next
hurdle. If it fails, that will mean being on hold for a Symantec customer
service agent for 30 minutes or more to get them to reset my product key
count so the program can be reactivated. If they won't reset it then I can't
activate it. It will have to be removed. I'll have to go back to Norton
SystemWorks 2003, which does not require activation but does not have Norton
Password Manager. Going back to it will mean a lot of extra surgery to the
operating system and Windows registry to delete all NSW 2004 references
manually, an unfortunate but often necessary step. That's another reason why
I don't want to uninstall SystemWorks! Please tell me your thoughts on this.

What is certain is that having Norton running when installing IE will
prevent proper installation - my suspicion is that having it running while
uninstalling IE will do the same.
One of the biggest problems with Norton software (apart from its
hoggishness) is that it all uses LiveUpdate - and LU is known to cause
problems under certain circumstances.
You're performing microsurgery on the OS - do you really want the theatre
swimming in bacteria??
I would also recommend NOT reinstalling Norton after the operation - Ghost
is fine, and WinFax Pro is fine but al the other stuff is overblown,
overhyped, and has too many hooks into the system with resulting problems
that ensue if the slightest thing goes wrong. Free alternatives are
available for almost all the functions of NSW - and many behave a lot better
than those in NSW.
I have not tested the procedure in the presence of Norton.

about alternatives for some time. There are free replacements for NORTON
ANTIVIRUS and NORTON PASSWORD MANAGER, but I know of none for most features

Excellent, but you did not tell me whether NF needs to be uninstalled and
reinstalled. No check marks appeared next to any of the NET Framework
components, and I'm wondering if that's normal or not. Similarly, is there
supposed to be check mark next to IE6 SP1? How will NF be affected by the
removal of IE? Should I go ahead and uninstall both Net Frameworks and
reinstall only 1.1 after IE is back, or should I leave all Net Frameworks
alone?

(1) I may not have reinstalled them after reinstalling WinMe, or
(2) If I did reinstall them, they did not install properly, or

Some updates have been replaced by later updates, and not every update in
Windows Update and the Windows Update Catalog applies to me. Updates for

The other tools can mostly likewise be used from the CD - although obviously
doing so means that you won't have the latest updates (not critical except
for NAV, since Symantec haven't supported Win ME properly since before the
release - and it was debatable even then)
Norton Uninstall I used to use when it was a separate program - and ditched
it when I realised what it was doing to my system. It has a nasty propensity
for removing current files (which may have been put there by patches) with
the files that were in place at the time of the original install of the
program - and not telling the |OS that it's done so. The resulting version
soup could end up causing exactly the type of problem you're seeing now.
My own preferred AV is AVG (www.grisoft.com) - I've found that it never
seems to conflict with system updates (I'm lazy, I don't like having to turn
off the AV to install an update<g>), and has a much smaller footprint than
NAV (but then so does anything - including my size 13's!<g>) The ones you
mention are all worthy contenders, and it comes down to preference, and
style - your choice, IOW!
For Spyware, there's no such thing as 'the best' - I use routinely both
AdAware and Spybot, with the occasional other addition if required. Each
tool tends to be better in some areas than others, and have weaknesses
elsewhere - I would never think of using just the one program for this, as
the 'market' is moving too fast for one vendor to keep up.
Password managers I know nothing about, and probably wouldn't use if I did.
The Windows search engine is quite capable of searching within files and
compressed files - I use it almost every day for that. Speed is not what you
should be looking for, as the high-speed search engines probably rely on
indexing - which in turn relies on background working (taking processor and
Disk cycles away from what you're doing at the time). I automatically turn
off any indexing options on software I install, since most such software is
intended for those having thousands of similar files (the higher the number
the more useful indexing is).

Why doesn't Belarc flog the JVM 3810? - because it's not looking for it,
since MS had to stop supporting the JVM at that point, and you should be
using Sun Java now.
You're opening a whole can of worms with the Windows Update problems <g> -
and it's one that I can't answer easily.
In theory, using IERadicator to get rid of IE then reinstalling IE6SP1, you
should only then require the latest Rollup update, and perhaps one or two
others - but until you do so, and see what Belarc has to say, then it's
almost impossible to predict which ones.
DO NOT worry about the update problem until we've sorted out the version
soup problem!! - a lot may resolve themselves at that time!!

What does IOW mean? I think Avast! or EZAntiVirus might be better for me.
Do you know of any freeware that can replace One Button Checkup,
WinDoctor, Disk Doctor, Uninstall Wizard and the defrag options? If I'm not
going to reinstall Norton, I'd like to find some replacements for its
various feature. I still have nothing to replace those features. I'd really
like the registry defragger/optimizer like Advanced Unisntaller Pro has, but
it is shareware. Any free alternatives?

I'd leave ZoneAlarm alone until after you've installed the 290700 patch
Once Zone Alarm is happy, install ALL the available critical patches from
Windows Update, no more than two at a time, with a reboot between each set.
Do Not do any web browsing except to Windows Update until after you have got
Zone Alarm functional again, and do NOT have Norton active when installing
the updates.
Once that's complete then post the hotfix listing to the newsgroup, and
start testing your other apps.

I have the Windows Resource Meter start up with Windows. It lets me know
when I run low on resources. It is a good guide to see if there are enough
resources to open a particular application at any given time. It helps me
know when it's time to reboot. I wish it also showed me system memory like
RAMIdle does. I will not reinstall either GoodMEM or RAMIdle if they will
hurt my operating system, but the Windows Resource Meter is a feature
important to me. If there is a better memory manager and system resource
manager, please tell me what it is. Thanks.
A full system antivirus scan will take more than 4 hours. I just ran a full

Any software claiming to be such is taking large liberties with the facts.
The resource meter is overkill - although useful at times - since it does
itself use resources. Just work on until you get a warning popup that you're
getting short, and then shut a few things down.
You don't have to sit and watch the virus-scan - do it overnight!
WRT .NET, the fact that it's 'not verified' means nothing one way or the
other - it's up to you whether you uninstall it or not (it may be a good
idea, though I doubt it'll be affected, and you can always reinstall it
later if need be)

Since it has been a while, I am also going to run full-system scans again
with eTrust antivirus (my new antivirus now that Norton has been
uninstalled), a2 antitrojan, Ad-Aware, and Spybot. This will take probably
the rest of the night.
When that is done, I will disable my security programs, uninstall Outlook
Express, back up the registry, and run IEradicator.

Internet Explorer HELP-ABOUT shows ;SP1;889293;887797. Previously, it only
showed ;SP1;889293. That is some improvement. However, Belarc Advisor still
shows no green check marks next to SP1, 887797, or 889293. That concerns
me. Also, 837009 still will not install. It says "This update requires
Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 to be installed." This is the problem I
had before. That is the error message that originally started this thread.
Antivirus, firewall, and other security software is still disabled, but I'd
prefer not to leave it that way for too long. I wonder if it would be
different if I had reinstalled Jet40SP8 and MDAC 2.8 before trying to
install any IE/OE updates.

I've just had the 837009 problem in Win 98se. I had *uninstalled* OE but
later decided I wanted access to the shared OE message store from 98se again
so made the mistake (I guess) I installing the update WU kept saying I
needed.
What it did was re-install OE5.0 though my IE version was at 6.0sp1. So I
re-installed OE as the missing components in a full IE 6.0sp1 re-install.
Then I re-installed the latest IE/OE cumulative updates and thereafter got
offered 837009 at WU. The copy of 837009 I have saved to disk wouldn't run -
saying *this update requires IE 6.0sp1 to be installed*, a message usually
associated with attempting to install an earlier cumulative update over a
later one - while it would from WU, but never register as installed despite
installation history saying it had.
I didn't investigate long, I just deleted the superfluous Win 98se partition
(I still have ME and XP here ).
I think you'd be well advised to start at IE/OE version parity.

superseded - but does at least give the user the confidence to proceed by
getting the patch installed, and then updated whatever is broken.

Why is nothing for Internet Explorer verified in Belarc?

Also from Belarc, I learned of another minor problem. My network printer
keeps making a duplicate of itself. I didn't mention it before but feel I
should do so now in case it is relevant. I have to keep removing the
duplicate network printers every so often from PRINTERS in Control Panel.
Any idea of the cause and the fix? The local printer is unaffected. Belarc
shows only one local printer but 9 network printers.

I do not want to install further updates until I hear from Noel. Windows
Update does not show any critical updates need to be installed, but I'm
wondering if 833989 does. It was uninstalled before running IEradicator, as
was 317244. Do I need to reinstall 833989 Microsoft VGX Update? MSXML 4.0
(317244) also didn't show up in Windows Update, but I have already
reinstalled that. It is still not verified in Belarc. Net Framework needs
to be reinstalled because of Paint Shop Pro and a few other programs that
use it. I do not know if I need to reinstall JavaVM 3810.
Please indicate any other updates or hotfixes you think I need to
install/reinstall, which might or might not show up in Windows Update or
Belarc. One thing you mentioned was the Java2 Runtime from www.java.com.

At what point will it be safe to re-enable my antivirus, firewall, and

We are very close to resolving the issues in this thread. I want to ask new
questions in new threads, but Noel said I need to take care of this first.
About this Experience

GOOD THINGS about this experience are that I feel confident using
IEradicator, and my computer has never been faster! Just browsing the Start
Menu, Windows Explorer, and Internet Explorer are faster than they've ever
been. That must be because IE is now less integrated with Windows and has
become more of a standalone browser. Or, it could be that my firewall,
antivirus, and security programs are still disabled. Or, it could be all of
the above.
Even if we can't fix the verification issues, we have gained speed, we are
rid of Norton, and we are rid of all the toolbars and activeX controls that
were installed "automatically" with SBC Yahoo! DSL. Now I am free to
install only the toolbars and activeX controls that I want.
BAD THINGS about this experience are that none of my Internet Explorer
hotfixes are verified in Belarc, including SP1. Is there anything I can do
to get them to verify? MSXML 4.0 is still not verified, and Net Framework
might not verify again either.
Could another program installed on my computer be interfering with Belarc's
verification of Internet Explorer and its hotfixes? Do you want
me to list all the programs installed on my computer? Not all installed
programs use Windows Installer, appear in Add/Remove Programs, or appear in
Belarc. If you need this, I'd have to make a separate post.

This may not be absolutely necessary - since the 837009 patch may itself be
superseded - but does at least give the user the confidence to proceed by
getting the patch installed, and then updated whatever is broken.

You now need to go back to Windows updates and check for any further
available critical (or other) updates for IE (my VPC install of ME with IE6
has at least two more in Belarc - which may or may not be required on your
machine)
Likewise for WMP and for OE.
Once you have all the available updates from WU installed (apart from the IE
language options!), then we may be able to compare notes.

My 'virgin' ME system doesn't show MDAC in the installed hotfixes either -
probably because Belarc don't consider it a core part of the OS.
WRT the higher speed you're seeing - this is NOT because of 'less
integration' (that remains exactly as it was before) - but because there's
less cr&p getting in the way (Norton and such-like)
The fact that Belarc isn't saying that your hotfixes are broken is enough -
it almost certainly would if they were!

Don't worry about 'the others' in these groups - the fact is that YOU did
the work of asking the right questions, until YOU were satisfied that YOU
knew what you were doing. Someone (even if not me) would probably have been
able to guide you through the process eventually, you just have to learn to
ignore the inevitable 'background noise' of conducting a tutorial in a very
public place. You seem to have managed that admirably, so far.
You've learned a lot (I hope), and I've learned something too - which is the
whole point of these groups!!
What we've discussed over the past few weeks may mean that the learning
process is shorter for those that come after - so feel free to consider
yourself a contributor to their learning process.
Having also suffered from depression, I am aware of at least some of the
associated problems - which is the point of my sig line.

Far from it. As I said earlier, I missed the early stages of your thread(s)
and guessed (incorrectly) that you may have been more concerned about
urgently getting your PC running, rather than (rightly) taking the time to
fully understand the issues involved with IEradicator.
Like yourself and Noel, I too have learned something from this thread - as I
do just about every day from these News Groups and as I said before, no
criticism or offence was intended.

WU claims I don't *need* any more CUs, but obviously there are some that I
do need. It isn't showing me everything that I need to install or
reinstall. The only way to know which ones I really need are by comparing
with Belarc and you as we're doing now.
In a previous post, I asked if there was a way to reset WU so that it would
show me things that were previously installed but which are no longer
installed or which are corrupt and need to be reinstalled. No one ever got
back to me on how to do that or if it's possible.
The only RUs that WU suggests are Net Framework 1.1 and the Euro Tool.
After Net Framework 1.1 is installed, I will install its SP1. Euro Tool is
not needed. CUs should be installed before RUs, so Net Framework will have
to wait until all CUs are installed.

It's not only cricial updates that are shown in Belarc - but I haven't yet
worked out what their schema is.

That's as may be - but the patch should be installed, and BugOff switched
off if necessary - that way the protection is from the ground up.

Open a DOS Window and run the command JVIEW - see what it reports as the
version. If 3810, then you're OK, otherwise it's best to update it. There
are some programs that won't run properly without a functional msjava - so
it's best to have the latest.

If the protocol is not installed/running on that PC, then other computers
can't be using it to access that PC! - so they must also be using another
protocol, or IPX/SPX is installed.

Do you have MovieMaker installed? Do you use it? - either way, the KB
article has also been withdrawn, I assume because the patch has been
superceded (probably by the MovieeMaker upgrade)

The order doesn't make much difference, although I genreally work in Number
order, and begin with the 8-series numbers, following with the 2/3-series -
just do no more than two or three at a time, with reboots between each set.

Noel, it said "bad command or file name" when I typed JVIEW at the DOS
prompt. I also tried Start - Run - COMMAND - JVIEW. My JavaVM must have
been deleted when IEradicator wiped out Internet Explorer. According to
this article, the 816093 JavaVM 3810 update will not install if there is no
existing JavaVM installed. I verified this by trying to install the update.
The error said "This setup will only update over an existing version of the
Microsoft VM." The Java 2 runtime at www.java.com is my only option for
Java.
In the mean time, I will install the other Windows Updates one by one,
starting with the HTML Help updates with a reboot in between each one.

of IERadicator, AFAIK.
However, it's increasingly unlikely that you'll need the JVM for anything,
so I wouldn't bother about trying to reinstall it. the Sun Java may shed
some light on it when you come to install tat, as it checks for the presence
of the MS VM in the process.

The JavaVM was definitely installed BEFORE I ran IEradicator, because I
verified it myself with the exact same procedure not that long ago. If
there is any problem installing Sun Java 2 Run Time, I'll let you know.

A System Restore test has been completed successfully. It works. I have set
a restore point. All Windows Updates have been installed that I am able to
install. Let me know which of the two above should be installed first.
IE/OE UPDATES

These Internet Explorer 6 SP1 updates (and probably other types of updates)
have to be installed in a certain order, or not all of them will install.
Dates are important, and I did not realize just how important. The lower
the number numerically in the series (whether 8 series, 2 series or 3
series), the earlier the update came out. Now some updates were re-released
at later times, so all these factors decide the order in which they should
be installed.
Some updates will not install unless others are already installed, and an
earlier update may not always install over a later update. In some cases,
yes, in others, no. That is most likely why 837009 would not install
originally, and why we had to force it to install with those special
instructions you provided.
The Windows Update site does not list its updates by date. The Windows
Update Catalog does, but not by default. You have to configure it manually.
Other users probably ran into trouble as I did by installing the wrong
updates first. All this research is going to help me next time. Hopefully,
it will help others too.
I installed the IE/OE updates in this order:

I installed them in this order: 828026, 837272, 832353.
It should have been in this order: 828026, 832353, 837252.
832353 seems to have installed successfully, but it does not show up in
Belarc, so I do not know. There may be a problem because I installed it
overtop 837272, and 837272 is a later update. On the other hand, maybe not
all Windows Updates are supposed to show in Belarc. 832353 is a hotfix to
"fix" 828026, a previous update.
OTHER UPDATES
---------------------
As mentioned earlier, everyt update is installed that I am able to install,
except Net Framework and Java 2 Runtime. They probably will not verify in
Belarc (like Internet Explorer). After they're installed, I'll reinstall
MSN Messenger and my other software and re-enable security programs. Once
everything is back up and working, the computer will need to be defragged.
I will post the updated Belarc report later.
Not every update shows up in Belarc, but I kept track of which ones showed
up and which ones did not. All the WinMe and WMP updates that showed up in
Belarc are verified. The 870669 ADODB stream update appears in the Data
Access category, and it is verified.
Security Break
---------------
It's time for another security break. Since I have had to have my firewall,
antivirus, and security programs disabled all the while I've been
communicating with you and installing updates, I'd better temporarily
reactivate them (except ZoneAlarm) and do full system scans again -- just
in case any nasties crept in during the last few days. I have been on the
Internet and downloaded email and news, but I've been careful what sites
I've visited and have deleted all emails (without opening them) from anyone
unfamiliar.
When the scans are done, I'll get rid of any junk, get a stable registry,
and create a new restore point before installing either Net Framework or
Java. Let me know which one to install first. I really do not mind running
these extra scans. I've put a lot of work into this computer the last two
weeks, and I want to keep it clean and protected. I may even do another set
of scans before opening ZoneAlarm for the first time. More about ZoneAlarm
in a minute.
SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster became corrupted, displayed error messages,
and refused to open. I had to uninstall them. They'll be reinstalled after
Net Framework and Java are on here. If I ever have to run IEradicator
again, I will be sure to uninstall SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster first.
Spybot, Ad-Aware, A2, and eTrust EZAntiVirus seem to be okay. I don't know
about ZoneAlarm. You advised me not to open that until after all the
updates are installed. It will detect MANY changes to the system. I have
all my settings backed up in an XML file, just in case ZoneAlarm does get
corrupted and needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled.
I'll be checking in with you later on the newsgroups so you can tell me
which update to install next. Thanks, Noel, for all the help you've given

It doesn't really make any difference, they are two totally different
technologies.
I said to install update in the KB order - so why did you install them in
another (seemingly completely random) order?
Many updates will have been superseded by more recent ones - run Belarc and
check than nothing's actually broken!

installed without difficulty. All other updates that will install are
installed. I did more research on the few updates that won't install,
specifically files they add or change and the versions. Most such updates
have been superseded by later updates. Not all installed updates show up in
Belarc anyway.

My system is now very stable. Internet Explorer and Outlook Express are
