Hi,

i'm desperately searching the MS-DOS command line
console on my HP IPAQ 6910, but i can't find any ...

Isn't this existing anymore, is there a replacement?

thanks
Marcel

No, there is no MS-DOS console on Pocket PC devices, at least in general.
There are consoles that you can buy and, if I recall, there might be one or
two free ones. Maybe you should tell us *what* you're trying to do, rather
than how you're trying to do it. There might be an easier and free way that
you haven't considered.

My HelloWorld.exe connects to a remote socket and does some tests.
The output is written to

printf() (my C test client)
Console::WriteLine() (my C++ test client)
Console.WriteLine() (my C# test client)

On my WinCE 4.2 i've used the cmd.exe to start it and see
nicely the logging output.
Without a cmd.exe: Where can i see the output?

thanks
Marcel

You don't. The way that the console is hooked into standard in and standard
out in your program can be adjusted but, without doing that, both are just
nul and the output goes nowhere. That's why you don't commonly see console
apps for Pocket PC. You could write your own console program and a driver
to act as the standard output device for your program. You might find it
easier to rewrite the UI of the application to just send strings to an EDIT
control in your own main window, though.

Search PocketConsole and PocketCmd (free with source code)
To get it work on WM5 you need to set Reg HKLM\Drivers\Console\Output to
O(DWNORD).

I have now downloaded them and installed them,
but when double clicking them nothing happens.

Where can i find a registry editor ?
I have tried one from PowerToys 2003 but this doesn't install.

Is there any task manager on Windows Mobile (CE 5.1)?

thanks
Marcel

Ok, it works now.

I have used the Resco Explorer 2005 5.42 registry editor,
the setting is:

HKLM\Drivers\Console\OutputTo 0 (DWORD)

(0 is a zero).

Now the PocketCMD runs fine,

thanks a lot,

Marcel

PS: Now i just miss a task manager to kill processes ...

PPS: The vncserver from http://www.pocketvnc.com/projects/pocketvnc/index.php
runs fine as well, so i can access the IPAQ desktop on my Linux X11 desktop.

Every IDE for Windows CE development I've ever used has a Remote Registry
Editor. Certainly eVC 3/4, VS.NET 2003 and VS 2005 have it...

Is this remote registry editor free to download somewhere
or do i need to buy a Visual Studio license to use it?

thanks

You can't distribute it separately, but it comes for free with both of those
versions of VS and with eVC (which itself is free). It's designed to be
used in the context of development for Windows CE. If you're doing
development for Windows CE, you must already have one of the development
environments and, I would presume, the registry editor. If you're asking
for something you can send to your customers or use at random without the
other components, no, that's a license violation (and it's more complicated
to separate out the pieces you would need to install, anyway, than it's
worth).

Thanks for the details.

All those Microsoft licences and violations ...
i think these approaches are outdated.
This is an archaic way of thinking,
which is not known in the Linux world ;-)

Here is a free registry editor:

Ah, excuse me but there are such issues there too. The GPL itself is one and
there are others regarding codec's and media stuff in particular. Let's not
be pretending everything is pie in the sky and completely free on Linux.
That would be as delusional as someone claiming MS is perfect and can do no
wrong.
