I keep getting the notice "New updates are available", and I have sucessfully
downloading Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack
2 (KB936181) 8 times in the past 6 days.
I have restarted Windows several times, but the updates keep coming! What
can I do to satisfy Microsoft that I have sucessfully installed this update?

Uninstall the update. Then find the update on MS's web-site and download
the manual installation package and install it from there. I have a couple
of installation packages that I had to do this for. It appears the Vista
updates are not as rock solid as the XP updates.

You tell Windows Update to not include the update. That would require that
you put Windows Update in manual mode, you view the list of updates, you
select the update you don't want, you right-click it, and you tell it to
hide the update. You do that, and it's not coming to the machine in the
updates.

David, Here's the MS Download Center link:

Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2
(KB936181)

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=021e12f5-cb46-43df-a2b8-185639ba2807

You are correct about KB936181 Mike, except the issue is not limited to
Vista : Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service
Pack 2 (KB936181) may repeatedly appear in the update list on Microsoft
Update or on Windows Update
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941729

Applies to Automatic Updates as well even if the KB doesn't mention it.

Thanks for the response. However, when I go to programs & features/installed
updates, KB936181 is not listed. But in my update history, I see that it was
"sucessfully installed" 11 times BEGINNING 7/14.
Following MOWGREEN's input, I went to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=021e12f5-cb46-43df-a2b8-185639ba2807
and saved the download. But when I try to open it, I get the
message..."Error opening log file. Verify that the specific log file location
exists + is writable." Now I've gone from 8 to 11 updates "sucessfully
installed". I'm reluctant to instruct UPDATE to disregard this update since
it ts marked "important". If this update is truly imortant, why hasn't
Microsoft fixed this download problem??? Is this somehow related to the auto
update to SP1 I received on 7/13?

You're not only interrupting, you're hijacking the thread.

Start a new thread rather than jump into someone else's when you have
a problem that is "almost same"..

Hello David and Jay,
Go to Check for Update window, right click on KB936181, click HIDE.
That's it. you won't see it again.

HIDING the update does NOT mitigate the *vulnerability* that it addresses.
Perhaps you need to read this:

David ... see this KB:

Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2

(KB936181) may repeatedly appear in the update list on Microsoft Update
or on Windows Update
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941729

In Vista you'll need to open an Elevated Command Prompt for the
resolution to work.
command.com [cmd] is located in WINDOWS\system32 and can be found from
Start Search by entering cmd
*Right* click it and choose 'Run as administrator'
Follow the prompts and then follow the KB article to rename
msxml4.dll

* Is HP software installed ? * If the answer is yes, than that is what's
keeping msxml4.dll in use and preventing it from being updated properly.

There is a misunderstanding . I suggested " Hide " option because the
update had ALREADY BEEN INSTALLED several times. I was not suggesting
NOT to install the update.

Not command.com but cmd.exe.

Yes, the misunderstanding is that msxml4.dll is *NOT* being updated
properly. Therefore KB936181 is continually reoffered.

The issue is not in the detection of the update rather, it's the failure
of KB936181 to install properly thus replacing msxml4.dll with the
"secure" version, 4.20.9848.0 .

So in this situation, hiding the update is not advised. One needs to
confirm that the update has installed *properly* by checking the Version
number and not rely on the entry in ARP.
