An elderly friend of mine now living permanently in Australia has just
bought a new computer to replace his XP machine.

It has the Windows Vista OS installed (an upgrade to 7 is available FOC)

He is now using --> X-Mailer: Microsoft Windows Mail 6.0.6001.18000

He tells me .... "All your emails are coming through as "Malevolent and
Phishing" and go to my junk mail box"!

**

I'm certainly not Phishing - nor am I malevolent! ;)

I am, though, using an iMac with OS X 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard) and Apple
Mail Version 4.2

Is there a setting in Vista which needs to be 'adjusted' so that my
friend won't receive warnings on receipt of email messages from me?

Thanks for any advice which may be helpful (I've never used Vista 'in
anger' but still have Windows XP on two separate machines)

Your friend can turn off the phishing warning.
In Windows Mail: Tools, Junk E-mail Options, Phishing tab, uncheck the boxes.

Thank you, Gary.

For clarification, would that not mean that any warnings would be
terminated in respect of *any* email message, not simply ones from me?

Surely, that rather defeats the purpose of the warning facility if my
suspicion is correct!

You can adjust things under Tools | Junk email options and he can put you
into the Safe Senders category without having to turn off the Junk mail
filtering completely.

Be advised that when he goes to Win7, there is no email client and he will
have to get one. If he is used to XP, then he can clone that machine using
Disk2vhd (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/ee656415.aspx),
and then run the old machine within the Win7 OS as a virtual machine and
continue to use OE that way, if he is set in his ways and prefers the
current email client.

It turns off phishing detection but not spam detection.
Otherwise, train your friend not to include suspicious looking
URLs in his emails.

I've read about Stephen here:

https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/profile=8804999e-4664-4684-bc02-6b33fd79807b

He seems like a genuine guy - keen to help others too.

What I would very much like him to do is ask you why you, PABear, have
lied about me being banned by ISP's (that has *never* happened - ever)
and for him to then email me to explain exactly *why* you have told him
not to help me.

He has already been of help, for which I have thanked him.

PABear was referring to Stephen's mentioning the "hack" to put WM on W7
machines. It is a procedure left for people who have more advanced PC
skills and experience. There are many people reading through posts (that
they didn't write) for solutions to mail problems, and they may think this
is easy, try it, and mess up their PC's. Then they come back here to
complain about it not working, placing blame, and raising heck. It is best
not to mention something like that unless an Op is specifically asking for
it - otherwise you open a can of worms.

Thank you for trying to be helpful 'slk759' - I completely understand
where you are coming from on giving your advice. I also note that you do
your very best to help folk on this group. That is to be commended -
well done and thank you! :)

I regret to advise, though, that I am 100% confident that PABear was
*not* referring to Stephen's 'hack' comment.

If you do not believe me - ask him yourself!

If you don't wish to muddy the waters here, go to www.aumha.net and ask
him there. You will note that he is the most prolific of all posters
there, having made a total of 20,252 the last time I checked!

If you do go there to ask, perhaps you'd also enquire as to what is
*special* about Member GC Jones - I'm sure he'll know exactly what you
mean! ;)

My mistake, I didn't go back and re-read the posts in question (gaffe !) -
But still, suggesting to install virtual XP for OE most likely beyond
expertise of user . . . . . I respect MVPs years of experience way too much
to argue with them.

As far as my personal assistance, I'm happy I can help anyone ! LOLOLOL!!
One of the things my clients always commented positively about was my
willingness to explain things in detail, use of everyday terminology rather
than techie-talk, and my "stay on it 'til its resolved" ambition. They get
really sensitive about what they don't know, and people who do know not
taking time to educate them or talking over their heads.

I forgot to mention the web site of GC Jones - it is here:

If you explore further at Aumha, you will discover that James A.

In case it's not clear, James A. Eshelman 'owns' the Aumha site!

Its not a "hack" . Its a very easy procedure to perform. It does NOT
require any sophisticated user skills. It will NOT result in the user
screwing up his or her computer. Please do not make such blanket statements
and discourage users by telling them they are too stupid to do it. That is
not the case.

I never insinuated anyone was stupid !! I just don't understand the logic
of making a recommendation such as that if the user is not able to figure
out how to keep someone's e-address from being labeled a phish. They knew
what to do - just not where to do it. Setting up and running a virtual
machine just adds a layer of unnecessary confusion to what is supposed to be
a simple procedure, sending and receiving email. My elderly mother has a
fit because she has to logon !! She just wants to "turn the thing on and
use it", without jumping through hoops. Some things that may be easy for
you, are not to others.

Just for the record, I was not knocking your obvious and well documented
abilities.

It may not be a true 'hack', but it is something that the average user
would find complicated. The concept of one OS running inside
another one is difficult to comprehend by someone who hardly
knows what an OS is or does.
Aside from conceptual difficulty, there is the issue of obtaining
a retail copy of Windows XP.

So what makes it different from any other Windows program? The "average
user" finds those complicated as well, so what's the difference. How hard
can it be to copy your OS from one computer, then run it in a window on
another computer? Do you really consider people so ignorant that they
cannot figure that out????

No wonder people don't complain about Walmail, given such a mindset.

I said that my friend was elderly ....... but that should *not* have
implied that he was just an average user! ;)

He is unfamiliar with Windows Vista, but has been using computers since
they had thermionic valves (tubes!)

I have a retail copy of Windows XP which I bought in 2002. It still
'works' and it could be transferred to him I believe.

Regardless, I appreciate your comments, Gary. Thanks.

I'd not heard that expression before, Steve - but all was explained when
I found a post you had made some while ago.

Your post said .............

Compared to "OE Lite" (aka Walmail), OE is great.

I started using OE back when it became first available in 1996 and it had
problems. The OE MVPs worked for years to get MS to fix some of them and we
were on track for fixing more issues in WinMail. Instead they abandoned
WinMail, and went their own way into the crapware they are now providing.

So you may have had valid objections to OE, but for 10 years we as MVPs and
users struggled with MS to fix those issues, and then they just spit in our
face."

Not quite - you are jumping to conclusions without all the facts!

That's the very first sentence in this snippet, here:

You are right in a way - he's not quite 70! He and I both joined the
Royal Navy as apprentices at the age of 16 but didn't meet up until
later in our careers - he's just over 5 years older than me.

By that stage we had both been commissioned and were both Air Traffic
Control Officers - with him teaching me to get things right! 1970 IIRC!

So we are both "young -old" eh?!!!
