All,
I was just wondering if anyone has experienced a loss of the ability
to view Nikon camera RAW thumbnails in Explorer? I can't say exactly
when it started to happen however I know it was after this months
updates around 5/10.

Now when I double-click on a .NEF file, and launch photo gallery I get
the same error message that you would receive if NcRawCodec101v.exe
codec was not installed "photo gallery can't open this picture or
video. This file format is not supported, or you don't have the
latest update to photo gallery."

I tried uninstalling the Nikon RAW codec and then reinstalling it but
it's still giving me the same error message. The only other quirk is
that Adobe Lightroom is installed on the system but is still working
perfectly.

If anyone can give me a hand with this I would appreciate it. Thanks
in advance. - CES

I've got exaclty the same problem here on Vista Home Premium, Vista
Business and Vista Ultimate (all three German).

Seems to be a general problem.

Same exact problem here on Vista Home Basic! The NEF codec was working
perfectly and then it stopped working. No pictures in Photo Gallery,
Explorer, etc. 32 bit Nikon Capture NX works fine.

Problem began about three days ago. I can't tell if it was when Vista
updates were installed or when I reinstalled Adobe Photoshop since I did both
about the same time. Tried deletion, reinstallation, etc. just asthe other
postings indicate.

I hope someone knows what happened.

All,

I understand that this problem is affecting a number of (but not all) users
of the Nikon NEF codec. Microsoft is aware of the issue and is investigating
it, and we will update this thread with more details soon. Thanks!

Dave,

Thanks for the update. I am strongly suspicious given the fact that most of
us having problems also mention installing Adobe products at the same time,
that when the Adobe installation modified Explorer (e.g. adding the Acrobat
toolbar) that they also overwrote the link to the codec.

Tks for keeping us posted.

All,
Just so there isn't any misunderstanding I didn't install any Adobe
software recently... I installed Lightroom 4 weeks ago and everything
was working until the last Patch Tuesday.

Just for your info the Adobe codec for RAW and Nikon Codec are 2
totally separate executables, that's why, in my case (Nikon D40) I
could view RAW files 3 mth. before I could import RAW files into
Photoshop or Lightroom.
Also, I've tested out a system that doesn't have any Adobe products on
it... installing the Nikon RAW Codec , could view .NEF Files in Explorer...
installing the most recent round if patches lost my ability to
view .NEF files.

If I get a chance I'll try installing the patches one by one to see
which of them is the offending update. Thanks for your help Dave - CES

Certainly. There are two ways to contact Microsoft about bugs.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/contactus.mspx lists some contact options.
You can also try http://support.microsoft.com/gp/contactbug.

I hope this helps.

All,
I just wanted to make you aware that it seems that the issue with
Nikon NEF Camera RAW has been resolved... the solution can be found
at:

http://blogs.msdn.com/pix/archive/2007/05/15/nikon-codec-issues.aspx#comments

But in short the problem revolved around a Nikon certificate having
expired. To resolve the problem:

- Uninstall the Nikon RAW Codec Control Panel\Programs and Features
\double-click on the Nikon RAW Codec entry in the list.
- Reboot your computer
- Download a new version of the 1.0.1 Codec - http://nikonimglib.com/nefcodec/
(the link is at the bottom of the page)
- Install the new Codec (FYI - the name of the codec is the same as
the old file NcRawCodec101v.exe)
