I recently bought a Fujitsu T1010, but haven't been able to use any gestures
at all. I'm familiar with them from an old Pocket PC, and find them really
handy, so this is a major blow. The XP Tablet site obviously offers nothing
in the way of contacting M$ for support, and Fujitsu similarly dodged the
issue saying that if the touchscreen is working otherwise it's obviously not
a hardware issue.
I've searched online but not found anyone else experiencing this problem.
Does anyone here have any ideas?

IIRC (I made the move from XP to Vista quite some time ago), XP did not
have any kind of "gesture" operations built-in (different in Vista and
Win7).

There gave been numerous third-party add-ons supporting gestures.
I can not remember any names, however.
You may ask aunt Google.

The XP Tablet Edition site seems to suggest gestures are part of the Input
Panel.

I've tried installing RitePen, but found it was rubbish. For some reason it
didn't recognise the pen being drawn on the screen half the time - i could
write something in Windows Journal, and though the text would be printed
fine, only random strokes would be recognised by ritepen. I'm having more
luck with StrokeIt, but these programs don't integrate with the Input Panel,
so can't be used to edit text as you're writing as far as i know.

On further inspection it seems gestures do work ... with the touchpad. But
not the pen.
.... helpful.
Anyone else had this problem, any suggestions?

They "partially work" on my fuji xpTablet

If they are made on a "blank" input panel, they work... but if there is
already any ink recorded on the input panel, they don't work...

example, type a line, put the cursor in the middle of the line, open the
input panel and try backspace and space gestures... they work, but not
enter and tab (at least for me)

Pretty "half baked" and not very useful.

Reading the link you posted, it does note that the writing area must be
clear, but there is no easy way to clear it once inked.

"insert" works to clear the input panel, but it first inserts what you
need to <backspace> out ;-/
