I've chosen to re-post this as its important and I didn't
want it lost in a long discussion thread.

Slow portrait mode text entry on a TC1000 was a graphics
driver issue (thank you Chris you are indeed a God) but
to fix it ignore HP whose "I'll analyse your computer and
suggest new drivers" service only found a new modem
driver. To fix it go to control panel, system ,hardware,
device manager, display adapters and right click the
device and chose update driver after a re-boot hey presto
everything works in portrait.

I'd like to thank everyone who contributed to the
discussion; clearly lots of people have run into this
problem. That in itself is also the problem, because for
every person who can now fix this "bug" there are 500
others who can't, don't venture routinely into driver
updates, don't want to face the wrath of their IT
department and don't even know this discussion group
exists. They are not being well serviced by either
Microsoft or the suppliers of their Tablets. Surely the
industry should strive to service the people who buy a PC
and really don't want to start fiddling with stuff they
don't understand (like drivers) and not unrealistically
expect their new operating system to work seamlessly on
their relatively new system.

Excellent analysis, Shaun, and that is what newsgroups are for -
peer-to-peer support to figure out what's going on because of all the
variables involved. As I tell my three daughters immediately after their
response to my request to do a chore around the house, "Please just call me
Dad, and I'm positive He would want you to do what I've just asked." 8-)

I'm glad you've got the issue ironed out, and sure will file your
information/solution away for those who may face it in the future. Thanks
for posting and sharing the solution.

Hey thanks for the advice.
I did exactly what you said. My TC1100 started installing drivers, from
where I don't know.
It made me reboot. Everything looks fine now even in portrait. Although this
seemed to work fine after eeach reboot it looks like it continues to work
even if I throw in some Outlook and Internet Explorer screens. I can even
play Ink Ball again.

Weird thing though. When I go to the driver properties, the drivers are
still identical to the previous version. So I suppose the drivers were
merely reinstalled.

I'll keep everyone posted on my further experiences.
So maybe we can solve this problem for everyone.
