I open up the tip for inserting text and when I get half way through the
available writing space on the tip it becomes a series of sporadic dots.
I know it's not a hardware problem because I have moved it around and
returned it to its original position and it works fine. It usually happens
when the tip is on the right half of the screen. In fact, it happens most
often when I open a tip in google's search box.
Toshiba M200 in portrait mode.
Is there a way of reinstalling the tip?
Update:
Here is a screenshot of what it looks like. And I repeat it has nothing to
do with my hardware at all; not the stylus tip et cetera.
http://matno.com/trail.jpg
Beside the search bar you're using, have you seen the issue consistently in
other areas too? Anyway, I would suggest reinstalling/updating the graphics
and pen drivers for sure (I would do so in Safe Mode, so no other drivers or
programs interfere with the install).
Oh, and do you happen to have the Sensiva Symbol Commander installed and
active? I believe a while back we found that caused issues with the Tablet
Input Panel. If you do, please disable it in the System Configuration
Utility ("msconfig" without the quotes in the Start/Run area, then remove
the check marks for the program on the Startup tab and restart your system)
and try reproducing the dots without it running.

It seems to be only appear in this instance with Google's page in that
position. However, once I move the bar slightly and or reposition it back in
the problematic area, the TIP appears to function properly again.

No IE6 + Google search page? ;-)
But, on the subject: maybe reinstalling SP2 (as it includes the new TIP
of Tablet 2005) could help to resolve the issue?
At least it could be worth a try.

Reinstalling XP SP2 and the Tablet PC Edition 2005 would not correct this
situation, because it is only the one location. Everything else works
properly without the dots, according to what we've been discussing.

What programming or plug-in is being refered to here? The screen shot
just had the google web page (which is just a form).

Well, if you have a quick look at the source of that page: no plugins or
java => nothing potentially referencing .NET or TIP or inking anywhere,
so the (W3C compliant) HTML page with the text input field falls into
the Advanced Text Services "Compatibility Configuration" category, for
which the OS has to handle all TIP stuff. One can't really blame Google.
Just for reference, I tried but can't reproduce your problem Matno, with
SP2 TIP and up-to-date XP updates, no .NET 2.0 framework Betas installed
only 1.1, FSecure antivirus enabled - in both IE6 and Firefox 1.0.2, and
both landscape and portrait mode, it works without the "dotting" problem.
So, I'd generalize that "correctly" would be the way the TIP normally
works on the Google page too, if everything else in XP / the system is ok.

As said, the page doesn't contain any .NET or ActiveX or any other
components, it's just plain HTML and some javascript (which sees
absolutely nothing of the TIP since it's simply not part of javascript
language) to process the form before submission, so I'd still strongly
suspect the problem is the TIP or TPCE2005 itself. The same problem may
appear on other pages or in other applications, but hasn't showed up
until now.

There is nothing wrong with googles page (it is my home page in firefox
- I have also used it with the internet explorer control). There is
obviously something else at work here.

how would you do the coding of an input area?

Indeed it might be. Unless it isn't the graphics or wacom drivers.

No, but it does sound like some corruption in something though. If it
was a problem with that page (or IEs handling of that page), I would
think that someone else would see it, as it is not exactly an unpopular
site!

Well, if it helps at all. The TIP+Google search form works fine in Mozilla
Firefox.

If you create a batch file like I've quoted below, you can
run that to stop and restart the affected files. Copy everything between

in the form of a *.bat file.

Keep in mind, I'm not saying it is IE's fault, just trying to eliminate some
things. If it were an issue in IE itself, we could all reproduce it. I use
Google probably 15 times a day, and have never seen the dots.

If you read again, I was talking about SP2 incl. Tablet 2005, /not/
hardware drivers. Second, there's no "coding" of the html input tag.
On two occasions where the TIP worked erratically or with occasional
glitches, I found reinstalling SP2 solved the issue. I'd still suggest
to give it a try. A SP2 reinstall is also the way to reinstall the TIP
components, cf OP's question, start of thread. SP2 also includes IE6
updates, which /might/ fix the problem, too (as it only appears in IE?
not Firefox).
(waiting for Google's response to an IE6+TIP inquiry (btw, help [át]
google.com) could take anything from one week to infinity, and I'd bet a
pint of beer that it would be "please contact Microsoft technical
support" 8-) )
cheers,
- Jan
Is it MOSTLY when in Google or ONLY when in Google?
When you originally posted about this on Feb 21 you didn't mention Google.
Both me and another person responded indicating that we had seen the same
problem. In fact, it happened to me just yesterday. When it happens, it
happens regardless of what program I am working in. For me, reboot solves
the problem.
The other poster indicated that he used a batch file to kill and restart
tcserver and tabtip processes with successful results:
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windows.tabletpc/browse_thread/thread/bdab5837a296101b/e889f7b915ab3a9c?q=el...@ulgm.org+group:microsoft.public.windows.tabletpc&rnum=7#e889f7b915ab3a9c
Any way, I think it would be very helpful if Matno clarified whether this
ONLY happens in Google since the original post implied otherwise to me.
Thanks,
Edward Lee

So have you made another web page with a 55 character input field in it
to see if there is a problem with Internet explorer and 55 character
fields on your machine?
