Our company which consists of 22 domains is undergoing consolidation
to bring all domains under 1 roof so to speak. Currently each domain
has their own WSUS 3.0 server and manages update rollouts for their
own servers and systems.
I want to deploy a new upstream server and change all of the current
servers in each domain to be replica servers. How do WSUS servers
like having their roll changed? Will this require a complete rebuild
of the WSUS server at each site.
Does anyone have any experience with this type of deployment?

WSUSServer A – Network A
WSUSServer B – Network B

Into

WSUSUpstream\ WSUSServerA Replica – Network A
WSUSServerB Replica – Network B

It really depends on the specific circumstances of the WSUS Server(s)
involved, and how radically different their configurations are. As we just
saw in a Win2008\WSUS forum post earlier today, if a downstream server with
extra products/classifications is converted to a replica of a server with a
lesser list of products/classifications, the replica server will continue to
(incorrectly) report status on those updates previously synchronized.

While it's technically not necessary... it may well be a very good idea.
