I have about 83 workstations that are showing up, The rest of about 100 are
not there. I have run the client diagnostic tool, they are all the same,
Cannot figure out why some are connecting and some are not. I have to be
missing something????

Scott, post the %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log from one of the clients that is
not appearing.

The Client Diagnostic Tool does not indicate any errors in the client-side
configuration.

However, as we've seen over the past several months, there are many
different reasons that can manifest as the client not appearing on the
server.

I am experiencing the same problem. I set up WSUS using both options for
assigning computers to groups, alternately. When using Group policy to assign
to groups I ensured the client side group name matched the WSUS group name .
However, using either method always gives the same result..All servers get
listed and all desktops plus my laptop are listed, but all other laptops (we
use laptops mainly) appear only once, one at a time, and then disappear after
they have had any patches applied. We use SOEs for all laptops (all are same
brand and model) and desktops etc, so there should be no difference in
network settings. Should I send a copy of one of the update logs of the
affected laptops as well?

regards
W:)

Lawrence, it looks like the clients are connecting to receive updates, but
not reporting back to the server???? let me know what you see. I had to
remove some of the log, it was too long to post.

I agree, Scott. There are no abnormal indications in this log save for the
one occurrence of the 0x8007400d this morning, which at first glance looks
like a transient error -- though it if continues to recur we'll want to look
harder at that.

The client did successsfully report to the WSUS Server, and it should be
appearing in "Unassigned Computers".

Typically, at this point, the question arises about duplicated SusClientID
values because of the use of an image to build clones that has not been
properly sysprepped.

Is there a possiblity that some or all of these 83 systems were built from
the same image?

Then we need to apply the standard "ooopss I used the same image to make my
clients fix"... :-)

Delete the values (SusClientId, PingId, AccountDomainSID) contained in the
registry subkey
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate

at each client. (You might pick one or two to verify that this is the
correct problem/solution first.)

Then restart the Automatic Updates service.

Wait 15 minutes for the service-startup detection to complete and obtain a
new SusClientID.

Run 'wuauclt /detectnow' to initiate a detection cycle with the new
SusClientID.

Wait 20 minutes, then check the WSUS server for the presence of the
"repaired" clients.

If that works, Torgeir has a script that will allow you to update the rest
of your systems via logon, so that you don't have to go physically to each
machine.

Hi,

A couple of scripts in the links below that handles the registry values
AccountDomainSid, PingID and SusClientId.

Many thanks...this solved my problem:)
From experimentation I found that I only had to carry out the two
instructions above to solve the problem.
Also, because we use a remote connection app (Dameware Utilities), I was
able to modify
the registry of each PC remotely and restart the Autoupdate Service on each
PC which was connected
to the network.
In our case it saved creating login script commands and testing them etc.

regards
G:)
