Running SBS 2003 standard.

After completing all Win Updates, I now recieve:

"Cannot connect to the configuration database. For tips on
troubleshooting this error, search for article 823287 in the Microsoft
Knowledge Base at http://support.microsoft.com."

when trying to connect to companyweb from the sbs server and client
machines.

Anybody had this issue and find a resolution? I looked at the MSKB
article, everything seems in order.

Thanks...

This sounds familiar like an update that was a year ago or so.
(Sorry I'm getting old)
Did you just do a lot of updates that you haven't applied in a while?

Thanks for your response Russell....

Yes Exactly. All updates were done in one shot on windows update site
till there was zero remaining.
But after many hours of frustration, and researching...I found a
solution that worked.

What I did:

- started by (on the SBS 2003 server) going to \\servername\Program
Files\Microsoft SQL Server folder, right clicking and accessed shadow
copy backups (aka previous versions tab)
-copied a backup from an earlier date to my desktop
- Booted to safe mode (on the SBS 2003 server)
-renamed C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server folder to C:\Program
Files\Microsoft SQL Server-original
- moved the Microsoft SQL Server folder from the desktop to C:\Program
Files
-Rebooted
-Companyweb now working fine
-went back into Windows update which listed SQL 2000 sp4 and another
server critical update (remember there previously was zero updates
remaining)
-selected all updates and downloaded and installed them, rebooted
-checked for additional updates and installed them...now again zero
updates remaining. Rebooted Server
-Happy to report companyweb working fine....Problem Solved!!

Hope this info helps others who experience this issue.

Hello,

I had the same problem, phoned Microsoft and it was solved. Afterwards I got
an email with the whole procedure. I'm not saying try this at home, but
maybe it helps you finding the culprit.

quote

[Error Description]
Cannot browse Company Web : Cannot connect to the configuration database

[Cause]
SQL Server SHAREPOINT instance got corrupted due to bad installation of KB
960082 and KB 960083.

[Resolution / Troubleshooting]
We tried to fix the SharePoint but unfortunatly it is corrupted beyond
repairs.

We made a copy of the CompanyWeb Databases :
STS_Config.MDF
STS_Config.LDF
STS_%SERVERNAME%_1.MDF
STS_%SERVERNAME%_1.LDF

We attached this database to the MSSQL Standard Edition Instance.
We gave the permissions to the default instance for NETWORK SERVICE : exec
sp_grantlogin 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'

We opened the SharePoint Administration Console
On Server Configuration -> Set Default Content Database Server
We changed %SERVERNAME%\SHAREPOINT to %SERVERNAME%

On Virtual Server Configuration -> Configure virtual server settings
We changed %SERVERNAME%\SHAREPOINT to %SERVERNAME%

On Virtual Server Configuration -> Configure virtual server settings
Selected Companyweb -> Manage content databases -> Select the database
Remove the Content Database and add the one attached to the default
instance.

CompanyWeb is working has expected.

As this issue was related to the KB installation, you wont be charged for
this incident.
