Reinstall of SBS 2003

Hello,
It looks like I'll have to reinstall SBS 2003 on some new larger hard
drives....running out of space on C drive.
Obviously, I want to "do this right" and minimize touching of any
desktops, if possible.
I'm looking for advice, hints, and gotchas from everyone.

How do I do the install/restore from tape so that I don't have to have
my desktops join a
"new" domain (obviously, when I install, I'll give it the same domain
name). Is this possible?

I use Symantec Backup Exec regularly, but can use NTBackup if it
offers advantages.
I have the Exchange agent, so can backup the mailstore directly. I'm
thinking I'll do an exmerge of the mailboxes as well, just to be safe.

Oh, but you really don't need to do a full reinstall. What kind of disk
config do you use? Hardware or software RAID? IDE/SATA/SAS/SCSI? How big is
the system/OS partition?

First...

Download & run something like TreeSize Pro to find out where your bigger
files/folders are
Do a disk cleanup on C (do not compress old files!!)
Move anything you can - User's Shared Folders, Exchange databases & logs,
Clientapps, MSDE/SQL data.

Also, I would take a look at Acronis' DiskDirector product for partition
resizing, if need be. It works well.
Delpart may be an option too (and is built-in) but I've never used it.

Try this:

1. Go to http://www.runtime.org/dixml.htm to download DriveImageXML. It is
a free disk imaging utility. While there, be sure to read up on WinPE/BartPE
boot disks and how to create one, including the DriveImageXML plug-in for
BartPE.

2. Go to http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ and download software required to
create a BartPE boot disk. While there, read up on how to include device
drivers (may need if you're running RAID), and plug-ins into your bootable
disk.

3. Sit down with DriveImageXML, BartPE, and any device drivers you need and
create a BartPE bootable disk. If you are running RAID, you will most likely
need to include your RAID drivers in the build. This is covered on the
BartPE web site. When booted from this disk, you system will boot in to a
highly stripped down Windows session. If you did everything right, you will
also have a menu item in that session to run DriveImageXML.

4. Attach an external USB drive to your server. Reboot from the BartPE CD.

5. Once into the BartPE Windows session, use DriveImageXML to create an
image of your drive(s), targeting the USB drive for the destination of the
image.

6. Shut down server. Remove and replace drives.

7. Reboot server from the BartPE CD.

8. Once into the BartPE Windows session, partition your new drives. You
will have to use the command line Disk Manager utility that is accessible
through the BartPE menus. Search Microsoft for the command line commands and
options. You can also run help from the command line for some assistance.
Don't forget that you must mark the partition that want as the boot partition
as "Active". This is also done with the Disk Manager utility. Also keep in
mind that the partition you will restore an image to must be of equal or
larger size than the one it came from. Shouldn't be a problem since you are
going to bigger drives anyway.

9. While still in the BartPE session, restore your image(s) from the USB
drive to the appropriate partition(s).

10. Remove BartPE CD. Reboot server. Go back to work.

Thanks for posting in our newsgroup.

You can do as Lanwnch's suggestion to move the SBS data file to another
location.

If you still need a large hard disk, you need to purchase a new hard disk
and take the following steps:

Note: A suggestion is choose new hard disk of the same brand and model.
1. The new hard disk should contain matching volumes the same size or
larger than those on the original computer.
2. Drive letter of the boot partition must be the same as the older disk.

Step 1: Back up SBS server with SBS backup.

Step 2: Replace new hard disk.

Step 3: Install Windows SBS and apply any service pack for the Windows
Server® 2003 operating system that existed on your server when you ran the
last backup.

Step 4: Restore the server from backup media with Ntbakcup

Hi,

If you need to change a hard disk which is not same type as the original
disk, you can't simple backup and replace hard disk and restore from
backup, because this may cause things unexpected. At this point, you need
to purchase a new machine with larger hard disk. Then you can migrate SBS
from older server to new hardware. For the detail steps, please read the
