An update. Works in safe mode with networking. Also I can connect to
it remotely from outside of the office but that works only for a
couple of minutes and then I get disconnected. How do I figure out
what's stopping it from working?

Please furnish more info:
SBS 2003 or 2008?
managed using the wizards?
SBS is the DHCP server?
does ping "ip_address work" and ping "netbios_name" not, or both not?
has ping ever been sucessful, and if so, what changed?
errors in the event logs?
if it works in safe mode but not normal mode, then there is some software
service that is blocking. With MS Config look for likely ones, stop them
one at a time and see if the situation changes. It may require restarts,
so you could use the 50-50 rule.

It's SBS 2003 managed using wizards, all services working DHCP up,
internal NIC responds both to NetBIOS and IP, as I said no error logs
reported so nothing really indicates what happened.
It started when users reported having problems with emails. I
connected to the server, found mailbox stores dismounted although all
the Exchange services were running. Restarted IS and successfully
mounted them back. After a couple of minutes I got disconnected. Users
still couldn't get any emails nor access any shares.
Server was restarted. I managed to log on, checked the event log not
finding anything there and got disconnected again. Restated again.
Connected and everything looked all right. Internet connection was
working and I could ping the router. Just in case I run the Connect to
Internet wizard. All fine. In the morning the server again was in the
state as described above not being able to ping anything outside it's
network card.

Just as a test, uninstall (not simply disable) Panda Security TruePrevent.
If it's something anything like Zone Alarm where the dlls and sys files for
the product are still active even if disabled, it can cause network issues.

After the test that Ace recommended, and if you reinstall the AV, please
verify that the AV excludes, at the very least, the folders where the exchange
data bases are kept and sysvol. There is a whole lot more, but start there.
When you have normal functionality, with or without the AV, start a new thread
asking what files folders should be excluded from real time AV scans.
Also, you can sometimes learn a lot by running the SBS BPA:
Guys sorry for your trouble but it turned up to be the NIC after all.
I swapped it with yet another one and that fixed the problem.
What are the odds of buying a faulty NIC... Thanks again
yaro
No problem for the troubles, Yaro. I'm glad you found the problem. What are
the odds for a bad NIC? Pretty slim. If only I had those odds to win the
lottery! LOL!
Cheers!
