For the last few days my scheduled ntbackup event has failed, citing VSS
errors. This also happens if I try to manually perform a backup.

When the backup starts it says the usual "Mounting the media" and then
"Preparing to backup using shadow copy" but then after about 3 seconds it
reverts to "Waiting to retry shadow copy". It must be continually trying in
the background but eventually just stops and no backup is performed. There
are then two Event Log errors straight after each other, these being (in
order):

Event Properties
Source: VSS
Category: None
Type: Error
Event ID: 12293
User: N/A
Computer: XXXX
Description: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Error calling a routine on
the Shadow Copy Provider {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5}. Routine
details Cannot ask provider {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5} if volume
is supported. [0x8000ffff] [hr = 0x8000ffff].

Event Properties
Source: VSS
Category: None
Type: Error
Event ID: 12289
User: N/A
Computer: XXXX
Description: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error
DeviceIoControl(\\?\Volume{86c4f1a6-0bdb-11d9-bfea-806e6f6e6963} -
000000FC,0x0053c020,00039D10,0,00038D08,4096,[0]). hr = 0x80070057.

Also, if I right click on any drive, select Properties and then the Shadow
Copies tab, they all report "Failed to retrieve volumes that are eligible for
shadow copies". I have tried restarting the computer, restarting the Volume
Shadow Copy service, I have also tried to do a backup with the Volume Shadow
Copy off. I receive the same result every time. I've looked up the error IDs
but have found little of help so far.

Although I've found several related items, I have been unable so far to find
an item the same as my problem. Appreciate any clues that anyone may have.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your post and thank Kevin's update.

Based on my research, this issue may be caused if you have enabled the Open
File Support (OFS) within Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Client Version 5.2
or some other third party softwares (including anti-virus software). So, I
would like to suggest that you perform a clean boot or the SBS server and
see if the issue persists. To perform a clean boot, follow the steps below:

A. Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks)
and click OK.
B. Select "Selective Startup" and remove the check box for "Load Startup
Items".
C. On the "Services" tab, click Enable All.
D. Check "Hide all Microsoft Services", click Disable All and clear "Hide
all Microsoft Services".
E. Click the OK button and then Click Yes to restart your computer.
F. Try again.

If the issue still occurs, please install the following three hotfixes:

A Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) update package is available for Windows
Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;833167

Time-out errors occur in Volume Shadow Copy service writers, and shadow
copies are lost during backup and during times when there are high levels
of input/output
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;826936

Error 800423f4 appears in the backup log file when you back up a volume by
using the Volume Shadow Copy service in Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;828481

If it still does not work, please run the following command IMMEDIATELY
after VSS fails: vssadmin list writers > c:\vss.txt

This will send the output to vss.txt in the root of the C drive. You can
check the txt file and also post it in the newsgroup.

Meanwhile, if you only backup one small file to the local disc using
NTBackup, will the issue occur?

If you have any concern on this thread, I am glad to be of further
assistance. We look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Jerry Zhao (MSFT)

Jerry,

Just to confirm... none of the links apply to Windows 2003 SP1/SBS 2003
SP-1? Yes/No

Hi Dirk,

Thanks for your question.

Yes. If you have applied the SBS SP1, you will not need to install the
three update mentioned in my last reply.

Have a nice day.
