Hello,

I´ve recently replace an old computer (WinXPPro) with a new one in one
(WinXPPpro) of my customers office. Before this change the user had no
problems with editing his files (word and excels). The old computer had
Office 2003, and the new has Office 2007. In some (not all) files in a
network share that only this user has access to is hi now not allow to edit
an save the files. The files says "This file is write-protected", and hi must
save it on his desktop or to antoher folder. I then copied all his files in
this share to another folder (on c:\root) on the server and shared that
folder. Then everything works fine and hi can edit the files again. If I then
tried to copy his files to c:\Users\Name it desnt work again. Why doesn´t it
work at start, and what can I do to make it work again in the original folder?

The server is a SBS 2K3.

(I hope you can understand my swedish version of english...:-)

The problem is probably caused by a difference in user identity. (Note that
user "Jonas" on machine "Jonas-PC" and "Jonas" on machine "Jonas-NewPC" are
not the same. And, when you are on a domain, the user "DOMAIN\Jonas" is very
much not the same as either of the machine specific users.)

The second possibility is that somehow the share used has been set to Read
Only, either at the Share level or at the filesystem (NTFS) level.

Hi and thanks for your fast answer,

the user was logged in as DOMAIN\User on the oldPC and is a even now in the
newPC loggedin as DOMAIN\User. Is he in that case not the same specific user?
I have never had this problem before when I replace computers.

In the newPC have I tried to uncheck the read-only box on the folder. I have
tried both as DOMAIN\USER and as DOMAIN\Administrator locally logged in on
the newPC. I have also tried to unchec read-only on server where the share
is. But when I close the properties and reopen it again, is the box checked
again.

Do things work properly on another machine? I suspect it is a problem on
the server, but it'd be nice to verify that before wandering down blind
alleys. After all, it'll do us no good to start checking file permissions
on the server or share if the client is just having issues releasing locks.

Should be the same user, UNLESS you recreated him somehow.

I'd be suspicious of some sort of network card issue if we don't come at it
some other way.

Hello,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that:

One of newly upgraded client computer fails to save the Office 2007 files
in a shared folder on the SBS server.

If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Suggestions 1:
=================
Typically, the exact same issue results from the improper permission on the
shared folder. Microsoft Office creates a ~$$TMP (Temp) File for the user.
When the user saves any file, Its changes (from the Temp File) are merged
with the actual file. Insufficient permission will deny the user to create
the temp file and result in the issue. Please check the permissions on the
share.

Suggestions 2:
=================
From my experiences, some software may cause the error while opening a
Office file from a shared folder. To narrow down the issue, you may check
how everything works if you logon to the computer in safemode with network.

Suggestions 3:
=================
I'd like to know whether the shared folder that you want to save the office
files in is made to be available offline. If yes, you may encounter errors
when the client-side cache database that the Offline Files feature uses was
corrupted. You may check how it works by disabling the offline files
feature.

If the issue persists, please collect the following information that will
help to narrow down the issue:

Information needed:
=================
1. How it works if the another user that has never encountered the issue
logs onto this client computer?

2. How it works if this problematic user logs onto another client computer
that has never encountered the issue?

3. To have a clear understand of you issue, could you please explain how to
reproduce the issue step by step?

Related information for your reference:

Office 2003 and 2007 Office documents open read-only in Internet Explorer

I hope these steps will give you some help. If you have any questions or
concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know.
